Field Hockey Takes Down Marywood in Home Opener

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team defeated Marywood 4-3 in their 2024 home opener on Sunday afternoon at Sprague Field. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (1-1) started the game strong, recording four shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes. Shortly after, they were able to break open the scoring on a penalty stroke goal from SADIE EICHLIN, who slotted the ball towards the left side of goal that got deflected in by the goaltender.
  • Three and a half minutes later, the Red Hawks doubled their advantage, as KASEY WATSON centered a pass off a penalty corner to GAB MAISTO, who stepped into a shot and ripped the ball into the back of the net.
  • Montclair added a third in the final moments of the opening stanza, as Watson slotted the ball from a penalty corner to KYLIE COMPTON, who sent a shot through the defense into the low right corner of the net.
  • After the Pacers scored less than two minutes into the second half, Montclair immediately answered with a goal from BELLA HEISER, who capitalized on a feed from ALEXA ANTONELLI following a scramble in front of the net. Marywood made a late push, scoring twice in the final two minutes of the contest, but Montclair sealed their first victory of the season.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Eichlin's goal was the third of her collegiate career, with Maisto collecting the 18th of her Montclair tenure.
  • Compton's marker was her seventh in her career, with Heiser picking up her first goal in just her second collegiate career.
  • Watson tallied the first two assists of her collegiate career, marking the first multi-assist game for Montclair since Maisto had two against Arcadia on October 16, 2023. Antonelli's assist was the third of her career.
  • MCKENNA LAMAN tallied a save and the victory in net for the Red Hawks, with SYDNEY WHITE making her collegiate debut in the fourth quarter.
  • The Red Hawks held a 12-7 advantage in shots for the afternoon.
