O'Reilly Notches 100th Career Victory in Field Hockey's 2-0 Victory Over Vassar

Montclair, NJ Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly earned her 100th career victory as the Montclair State University field hockey team defeated Vassar 2-0 Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (3-1) battled the Brewers in a scoreless first stanza, holding a 4-1 edge in shots. After a penalty corner played in by NATALIE SURMA nine minutes in, SADIE EICHLIN looped a high arcing shot towards the cage that rattled off the crossbar.
  • EMMA BIANCO registered a shot 96 seconds into the second quarter that Vassar prevented from going in with a defensive save on the goal line. The visitors responded with three consecutive shots, including two that had to be parried away by SYDNEY WHITE.
  • Montclair broke through in the 26th minute, as SADIE EICHLIN slid a pass to KYLIE COMPTON, who ripped a shot past the Brewers defense and into the back of the net. The Red Hawks put two more shots on goal over the remainder of the half, but their advantage stayed at one going into the break.
  • The Red Hawks doubled their lead in the 41st minute, as Eichlin sent a ball from the far side of the field to TORI SUTERA, who flicked the ball into the back of the net. Montclair did not allow a shot the rest of the game, sealing their third straight victory at home.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • O'Reilly, who ranks second all-time in program history for wins, became the second coach to eclipse the century mark, joining Beth Gottung.
  • Compton's goal was her second in three games and the eighth of her Montclair tenure. Sutera has scored in back-to-back contests, notching the 12th goal of her career.
  • The two assists for Eichlin marked the first multi-assist game in her collegiate career and third in Montclair's last two games.
  • White notched two saves and the shutout, her second in as many contests for the Red Hawks. She became the first goalkeeper to notch back-to-back shutouts since MCKENNA LAMAN on October 25 and 28 of 2023.
  • Montclair held a 19-5 advantage in shots, including eight out of 10 on goal.
FROM THE FIELD

"Very happy with our performance today - especially earning a shut out. I thought we did a good job playing through mistakes and finding a way to chip away at Vassar in each quarter. When things weren't working out exactly to our game plan, our team picked each other up and stuck together to get the ball in the back of the cage. I'm grateful each day to coach with such a special program at Montclair State. The wins are always exciting, but it's really the people (women on the team, alumni, colleagues, etc) who make each day rewarding." - Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly
