Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State field hockey team outlasted Franklin & Marshall in a game that came down to the final period as the Red Hawks downed the Diplomats, 2-1 on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MSU got themselves on the board first late in the opening period when KASEY WATSON volleyed a penalty corner pass up to GAB MAISTO, who fired the shot into the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead at the 14:10 timestamp.
- F&M garnered more of the offensive opportunities in the second period, out shooting MSU 3-1, but the Red Hawk defense held with two saves coming from the pad work of SYDNEY WHITE. Montclair kept the 1-0 edge into the second half
- The Diplomats hit the equalizing goal in the third period at the 42:16 mark on a ball put in right in front of the cage by Megan Dadio to bring the game back at even.
- The game-winner game in the fourth period at the 54th minute when NATALIE SURMA played a ball of a rebound shot and hit the go-ahead goal. Franklin & Marshall tried to pressure late to send the game to overtime but were unable to get a shot off and Montclair State took the win.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
- Both Maisto and Surma each had their second goals of the season, putting them in a four-way tie for the team lead.
- White finished with six saves on the day on 11 shots faced. Both were career-highs.
- The Red Hawks currently hold the best record in the NJAC at 4-1.
FROM THE FIELD
- "I'm so proud of our group for the way we battled and played with resiliency today. F&M is a great program and their intensity and level of play is what we are going to see in upcoming NJAC games. I thought our defensive group was outstanding today and really limited F&M's circle entries and overall scoring opportunities. As we lead into a new week, we are focused on improving our execution on the attacking side of the ball and finding ways to score more consistently." Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly.
