Field Hockey Wins Fifth-Straight Game; Blanks DeSales, 3-0

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State field hockey team (5-1) dominated their five-game homestand to start the 2024 campaign as the secured their fifth win in five games by blanking DeSales (1-4), 3-0 on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks defense was as stout as it comes in the first period, holding the Bulldogs to zero shots altogether. While they logged three shots, none were able to find the back of the cage, but the offensive presence was there heading into the second period.
  • The first goal of the contest came at the 28:42 timestamp where GAB MAISTO set up KYLIE COMPTON with a one-timer that she slapped in to give Montclair a 1-0 lead that remained into the second half.
  • It was a nodded up third period for both teams as they each exchanged three shots and one shot on goal with each goalkeeper making a save. DeSales did manage one more penalty corner than Montclair, but was unable to capitalize and the 1-0 score remained heading into the final period
  • EMMA BIANCO helped the Red Hawks pull away with a 2-0 edge at the 51:17 mark in the fourth when fired in a pass from JOEY MAYER for her second goal of the season. The dagger goal came just about six minutes later when BELLA HEISER dribbled around the goalkeeper and passed off a tap in shot to Mayer for the third Montclair goal. The defense held strong in the final minutes of the game to secure their third shutout of the season.

  • Mayer collected her first collegiate points today with a goal and an assist.
  • Compton's goal today put her at the head of the team in goals scored on the season.

FROM THE FIELD
"Today highlighted the depth of our team's talent. The GAB MAISTO - KYLIE COMPTON combo on APCs is something special and we'll continue to lean into their experience and decision making to put the ball in the back of the cage. Our freshmen class raises the bar on a daily basis. SYDNEY WHITE continues to shine in big moments and she had critical saves in each quarter tonight. JOEY MAYER has been a catalyst on attack in every game this season and it is rewarding to see her earn her first collegiate goal and assist tonight. We've enjoyed this stretch of home games and we're ready to battle on the road this weekend." - Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly
