Field Hockey Blanks Gwynedd Mercy, 4-0, for Sixth Consecutive Victory

Gwynedd Valley, PA Behind multi-goal performances from GAB MAISTO and NATALIE SURMA, the Montclair State University field hockey team blanked Gwynedd Mercy, 4-0, for its sixth-straight victory on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (6-1) opened the game with five consecutive shots over the opening 10 minutes before they broke the scoring open shortly after. KELLY WESTERVELT played a pass in on a penalty corner to Maisto, who shedded a defender and sent a shot past another into the back of the cage.
  • Two minutes later, Surma put a penalty corner into SADIE EICHLIN, who had a shot blocked but the resulting loose ball found Maisto, who capitalized to double the advantage.
  • The Red Hawks continued their offensive push, recording a pair of shots spanning the remainder of the first quarter and beginning of the second before they added a third goal in the 26th minute. TORI SUTERA intercepted a clearing attempt from the Griffins. She sent a pass to KYLIE COMPTON, who found Bloom right in front of the goalkeeper. Bloom slipped a pass to Surma who recorded her first goal of the afternoon.
  • Montclair tallied their fourth goal of the afternoon in the 42nd minute, as Sutera collected the ball along the near side of goal and played a pass across to Surma, who tucked a shot into the cage. Gwynedd Mercy recorded three shots in the final stanza, including two that had to be saved by REBECCA ARMSTRONG, but could not get on the scoresheet as the Red Hawks sealed the victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Maisto recorded the third multi-goal performance of her career and first since October 4, 2022. For Surma, it marked the first time in her Montclair tenure that she tallied multiple goals.
  • The Red Hawks outshot the Griffins 21-4 on the day, including an 11-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Montclair has won six consecutive games, the most since the 2022 season and the longest streak since the 2018 campaign. They have outscored opponents 14-1 over their last five contests.
  • The shutout marked the fourth of the season for the Red Hawks, who have allowed one goal over the last 300 minutes of play.
  • The 6-1 start for Montclair is its best through seven games since 2019.
