Men’s Soccer Notches Fifth-Straight Shutout; Rolls Past John Jay, 8-0

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's soccer team (5-2-1) came out hot as ever on Monday night at MSU Soccer Park and earned their fifth-straight shutout as they rolled past John Jay (1-5-1), 8-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was sudden impact for the Red Hawks as they scored two goals in just about the first two and a half minutes of the contest. Just 54 seconds into the match, ANDRE SHELTON dribbled past defenders into the left corner and crossed a pass to REED KARSEN, who headed in a ball for the first goal. In a spitting mirror image of the first goal, Karsen dribbled past defenders into right corner, played a ball into the penalty box for SALEM ELLISY to head one in for a 2-0 lead.
  • At the 18:53 mark in the game, OSBIN MENDEZ played a ball off a defender and fired in a top shelf goal for an emphatic 3-0 Red Hawks lead. Montclair then found two goals withing a minute of each other in the 28th and 29th minutes of the game. The first came from CHRIS FONTANAZZA, who dribbled around multiple defenders and fired in a shot. The other was done in similar fashion from GENE CARLO ALTAMIRANO for his first goal of the season.
  • Holding a 5-0 lead, Montclair State did not take their foot off the gas when some great passes JAKE WINCHOCK and Fontanazza that earned a double assist off the foot of CHRISTIAN BERNAL at the 31:00 timestamp. The final goal of the first half came right at its end when one last offensive push was rewarded with a goal from LOGAN NENO just as the first half expired and the Red Hawks took a 7-0 lead into the second half.
  • The only goal of the second half came early when DIEGO FLORES took a corner kick and placed it perfectly for MAX PERRY to place a shot into the back of the net for the 8-0 lead. Montclair then pumped the brakes, focused on preserving the shut-out streak and only allowed two shots down the stretch for their fifth-straight shut-out win.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • The Red Hawks pushed their shutout streak to five which is three off from tying the all-time record of eight that was set in 2007 and 2021. The total minutes of that streak is up to 504 minutes
  • ALEXANDER VELASQUEZ had a light day, seeing no shots on goal in the win while DONOVAN FRIEDHOFF was between the pipes the whole second half and made his first collegiate save.
  • Six Red Hawks collected their first goals of the season, including Nenon and Perry who both scored their first collegiate goals.
