Men’s Soccer Opens NJAC Play with 2-0 Victory Against NJCU

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State men's soccer team (5-2-1, 1-0-0 NJAC) opened up their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule today with yet another shut out as they were victorious against New Jersey City (6-2-3, 0-1-0 NJAC), 2-0 on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks pushed the tempo offensively with a few great chances. OSBIN MENDEZ had a near the penalty box chance that went high and IAN CHESNEY had a header that drifted just a bit right off a corner within the first 15 minutes of the game.
  • The first cash-in opportunity came at the 17:46 mark in the first half when ANDRE SHELTON was fouled in the penalty box to set up Mendez with a penalty-shot opportunity, which he buried into the top-left corner of the goal for the 1-0 advantage.
  • It was towards the end of the first half when Montclair doubled their lead when KEVIN CONTRERAS lasered a shot from about 35 yards out on a line into the back of the net to take a 2-0 lead into the second half.
  • The second half was more even then the first half when it came to offensive opportunities with the Red Hawks generating six shots to the Gothic Knights four. NJCU put two shots on goal with their best opportunity coming in the 74th minute with a deep free kick just to the left on the penalty box, but ALEXANDER VELASQUEZ was stalwart and denied the goals. REED KARSEN had a nice shot attempt in the 76th minute that was met with an impressive save from Gothic Knights goalkeeper Dominic Cunha. The Red Hawks clamped down at the end and earned their sixth-straight shutout to start out conference play.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • The Red Hawks are now up to 594 straight minutes since surrendering their last goal on September 6 against Milwaukee School of Engineering.
  • Mendez collected his third goal of the season and tonight was the first time he has ever sunk a game winner.
  • Montclair outshot New Jersey City, 17-6 with an emphatic 11-2 shot difference in the first half. The Red Hawks also had eight corners and did not surrender a single one to the Gothic Knights.
