Pair of Late Goals Seal Comeback Victory for Men's Soccer Over Kean, 2-1

Montclair, NJ Powered by a pair of late goals, the Montclair State University men's soccer team mounted a dramatic late comeback to take down Kean 2-1 on Wednesday night at MSU Soccer Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (7-1-2, 1-1-0 NJAC) looked to jump ahead in the opening 10 minutes, as SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI notched the game's first attempt on goal that was parried out of play by the Cougars. Kean countered a few minutes later with an attempt on goal of their own that was gathered by PIERRE SOUMEILLANT. The two sides continued to trade chances, with JAKE WINCHOCK seeing a shot on goal saved by the Kean keeper in the 15th minute.
  • Both sides searched for the opening strike of the contest as the half began to wind down, with TOMAS MONTEIRO and Winchock recording shots over a minute span before Kean answered with two of their own, the second being pushed over the bar by Soumeillant in the 35th minute. Neither side could steer a shot on frame in the final 10 minutes of the half, going into the break scoreless.
  • Kean scored in the first minute of the second half, playing a long through ball across midfield that snuck past the line of Montclair, creating a one-on-one opportunity that the Cougars capitalized on to take the lead. Soumeillant tallied a pair of key saves over the next 10 minutes to maintain the margin, as the Red Hawks began to search for the equalizer.
  • In the 80th minute, the home side broke through to tie the game at one. JOSH VIRGIL collected the ball on the nearside edge of the box, cut towards the end line, and served a ball towards goal that was headed down and in by Monteiro. Five minutes later, KEVIN CONTRERAS surged down the far touch line and into the corner of the box and ripped a ball towards the far post and by the keeper. Montclair did not surrender a shot the rest of the way, sealing the comeback victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Monteiro notched his second collegiate goal, with Contreras recording his third of the campaign to move into second on the team in scoring. Virgil tallied his first assist of the season on Monteiro's goal.
  • Soumeillant made his collegiate debut in net, recording four saves and the victory.
  • The Red Hawks held a 20-11 advantage in shots, including a slim 7-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Montclair has won eight consecutive games against Kean dating back to the 2017 season, outscoring the Cougars 22-4 during that span.
