Volleyball Extends Win Streak to Nine; Downs Elizabethtown & Wilkes

Wilkes-Barre, PA – The Montclair State University volleyball team (17-3) extended its win streak to nine matches in a row after downing Elizabethtown (13-7), 3-1, and Wilkes (11-12), 3-0, on Saturday.

VS. ELIZABETHTOWN
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elizabethtown had a slight early advantage of 8-5 before Montclair went on a 7-2 run, sparked by pairs of kills from ZOEY HORN and SOFIA DIPROFIO that gave Montclair a 12-10 lead. The Blue Jays scored three points in a row, and both teams went back and forth up to a 20-18 lead for E-Town. Montclair came alive late with a 7-1 run and took set one, 25-21. DiProfio and BRYN BAUTISTA each collected a pair of kills in the final run.
  • Set two saw an early exchange that four lead changes and six tied scores up to a 6-5 Montclair lead. Elizabethtown flipped the script with a massive 16-1 swing with a 22-8. Both teams got three points each down the stretch with the Blue Jays taking the second set, 25-11.
  • Montclair came out hot in the third. They jumped out to a 9-3 lead, and after a pair of points from the Blue Jays, the Red Hawks put together a 6-1 run for a 15-6 lead. After a 16-9 Montclair lead, they finished off the set with a 9-2 run that led them to a 25-11 set-three win. CAMRYN MUUSS led the set with five kills and a service ace.
  • The Red Hawks rattled off five of the first six points of the set and eventually jumped out to an 8-2 lead. E-Town closed the gap with a run that put the score at 10-7, but Montclair responded with a 7-1 run to take a 17-8 advantage. After both teams exchanged points, Elizabethtown generated a 6-2 run to get within three points at 21-18. The Red Hawks capped off the set with four unanswered points and sealed the match with a 25-18 set four win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Muuss was spectacular in the opening match. She led the team in kills (17) and recorded her first-ever 20-dig match. She also had three service aces and a block.
  • Cornelius amassed 42 assists in the match and also contributed mightily on defense with 16 digs.
  • Bautista recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs.
  • DiProfio knocked down 12 kills while EMMA HATCHER tallied 18 digs in the match

VS. WILKES
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wilkes pushed out in front 3-1 before Montclair responded with a massive 13-1 swing that gave them a 14-4 edge. Wilkes clawed back to a score of 17-10, but four-straight attack errors gave Montclair a 21-10 lead, and they eventually finished off the set with a 25-14 win.
  • Two kills from Muuss, one from Horn, and one from MIA CAPRIGLIONE highlighted Montclair rattling off eight unanswered points at the beginning of set two. The Colonels scored four of the next five before both teams exchanged points up to a 12-6 Montclair lead. The Red Hawks then rattled off an 8-1 run, led by two Bautista kills, to jump out to a 20-7 advantage. Wilkes did not roll over, however, compiling a 6-1 run to narrow the deficit to 21-13. Montclair scored the next three points, with Wilkes responding with two. Capriglione then knocked down the final kill of the set to seal a 25-15 triumph.
  • The Coloniels kicked off the third set with three unanswered. After falling behind 6-2, Montclair scored the next four to tie the set, 6-6. Both teams fought tooth and nail up to a 14-13 Wilkes lead. Montclair put together a 7-2 run for a 20-16 lead. Three straight points from Wilkes were responded with a 4-1 run for Montclair that gave them match point at 24-20. The Colonels put down a kill before Muuss hammered down the final point of the match, and Montclair took the match after a 25-21 win in the third set.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • Muuss posted another double-double on the day, leading the way in kills with 15 and compiling 12 digs.
  • Bautista and Hatcher each served three aces, with Hatcher leading the way in digs with 19, followed by Bautista with 12.
  • Montclair currently sits 17-3, a mark they haven't achieved since the 2016 season, when the team eventually finished at 26-9 and won the NJAC.
