Women’s Lacrosse Upends Mount Saint Vincent in Home Opener, 22-6

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University women's lacrosse team (2-1) dominated in their home opener on Wednesday night, defeating Mount Saint Vincent (0-1) by a score of 22-6.

How It Happened
  • The Dolphins struck first, scoring at the 13:30 mark. However, their lead was short-lived as a green card gave Montclair a woman-up opportunity. CHELSEA STACK capitalized on a free-position attempt to net the Red Hawks' first home goal, sparking a run of seven unanswered goals in just under seven minutes to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Six different Red Hawks contributed to the scoring surge, including CARA MCCARTNEY, who found the net twice. Mount Saint Vincent managed a goal at the 4:50 mark, but KAELEY SEK added one more for Montclair before the end of the first quarter, making it 8-2.
  • After both teams exchanged a pair of goals early in the second quarter, another goal from Stack ignited another scoring streak—this time, six unanswered goals—to extend Montclair's lead to 16-4 by halftime. Five different Red Hawks found the back of the net during the run, including NORAH MONAGHAN, who tallied two goals.
  • The scoring pace slowed in the third quarter, with just four goals recorded. A minute and a half in, KYRA MORENA notched her first goal of the season off a feed from AVA ABBATIELLO. Mount Saint Vincent responded quickly with a goal at the 12:19 mark. At 6:26, Abbatiello converted a free-position shot for the first goal of her collegiate career. Morena added another before the quarter ended, giving Montclair a dominant 19-5 lead heading into the final period.
  • Sek opened the fourth quarter with her second goal of the game at the 12:33 mark. The next goal didn't come until the 5:22 mark, when the Dolphins netted their sixth and final goal. Montclair closed out the game with Morena completing her first collegiate hat trick with 2:46 remaining, followed by LEXI ROBINSON scoring with just 46 seconds left to seal a 22-6 victory.
Inside the Numbers
  • Stack was a key playmaker, recording eight assists along with two goals for a 10-point performance. Her eight assists tie for the sixth-most in a single game in program history, a record she already holds with an 11-assist game against Ramapo on April 16 last season.
  • Robinson led the Red Hawks with four goals, while Sek, McCartney, Monaghan, and Morena each secured hat tricks.
  • Goalkeeper JOEY GROTKOPF had a light workload, earning the win with four saves. Lea Hegwald split time in the net, entering in the second half and recording one save.
  • Montclair's offense was dominant, generating 38 shots compared to Mount Saint Vincent's 11, with 30 of them on target.
  • The Red Hawks were nearly flawless on clears, successfully completing 10 of 11 attempts.
