Softball Falls to Lake Forest, Walks Off Against Roger Williams

Clermont, Florida The Montclair State softball team (2-2) split its games on Monday evening, falling to Lake Forest (2-0) in a 6-2 defeat before rallying for a dramatic walk-off victory against Roger Williams (2-4), winning 6-5.

Game 1: Montclair State vs. Lake Forest

How It Happened

  • Lake Forest took an early lead, scoring twice in the first inning on an RBI groundout and an RBI double to go up 2-0.
  • After three scoreless innings, the Foresters extended their lead in the fourth, capitalizing on a fielding error that allowed two runs to score. A two-run homer in the fifth put Montclair in a 6-0 hole.
  • The Red Hawks showed life in the top of the sixth. Julia Vasquez reached on an infield single, followed by another from SOPHIA ALONSO. A wild pitch advanced both runners before CARLEE IANNONE delivered a two-RBI single through the right side, cutting the deficit to 6-2. However, Montclair was unable to generate further offense, falling short in the comeback attempt.

Inside the Numbers

  • Alonso continued her strong start at the plate, recording her third consecutive multi-hit game.
  • BELLA BUCY took the loss, pitching six innings while allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts.
  • MOLLY COLLIGAN recorded Montclair's only extra-base hit, doubling to center field in the second inning.


Game 2: Montclair State vs. Roger Williams

How It Happened

  • Alonso led off the game with a bunt single, stole second, and advanced to third on an errant throw. DYLAN BOLES brought her home with an RBI groundout, giving Montclair a 1-0 lead.
  • The Red Hawks added another run in the third. With two outs, Boles singled, stole second, and scored on an infield single from Iannone, making it 2-0.
  • Roger Williams tied the game in the fourth, loading the bases and scoring on a sacrifice fly and an RBI infield single.
  • Montclair responded in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run surge. Iannone led off with a double and was replaced by pinch-runner KEIRA ATKINSON. After a sacrifice bunt by Colligan moved Atkinson to third, KATIE BRUNNER drove her in with an RBI single. Brunner then advanced on a passed ball and stole third. Following a walk by Maddie Leech, JORDYN HESTER singled through the right side to score Brunner. Another RBI single up the middle allowed Leech to score, putting Montclair ahead 5-2.
  • Roger Williams mounted a last-inning comeback, tying the game at 5-5 with a two-RBI double down the left field line and an RBI single up the middle. However, the Red Hawks held them off from taking the lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, LIZ MULLEN led off with a walk and stole second. Boles also walked and was replaced by pinch-runner PAIGE SCHEID. A groundout moved both runners into scoring position before Colligan put the ball in play, forcing a throw home that was too late to catch Mullen, sealing the 6-5 walk-off win.

Inside the Numbers

  • Brunner and Iannone each recorded multi-hit games. Brunner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run, while Iannone finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Montclair showcased aggressive baserunning, stealing four bases.
  • SAGE RIZZI pitched 6.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while striking out three. CHEYANNE WEIGAND entered in relief in the seventh and earned her second win of the season.

Up Next

Montclair State will have a day off before returning to action with a doubleheader on Wednesday. The Red Hawks will take on Wesleyan at 9:00 a.m., followed by Rhode Island College at 11:30 a.m.
