Softball Drops Pair of Games to Wesleyan & Rhode Island College

Clermont, Florida – The Montclair State softball team (2-4) dropped both games of its Florida doubleheader on Wednesday, falling to Wesleyan 10-2 and Rhode Island College 4-3.

Game 1: Montclair State vs. Wesleyan

How It Happened

  • The Cardinals got off to a quick start with a three-run first inning, scoring on an RBI single to center field and a two-RBI single to the same spot.
  • Wesleyan extended its lead with a six-run third inning, highlighted by a three-run homer over the center field fence, an error, and a two-run double to left field, making it 9-0.
  • The Red Hawks got on the board in the bottom of the third. RILEIGH GLYNN led off with a walk, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by SOPHIA ALONSO, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 9-1.
  • Montclair added another run in the fourth. JULIANA CASILLAS reached on an error, stole second, and scored on a Glynn RBI single to left field, making it 9-2.
  • Wesleyan tacked on an unearned run in the fifth, pushing its lead to 10-2 and putting the mercy rule into effect.
  • Montclair had runners on base in the bottom of the fifth when LIZ MULLEN walked and GIANNA STREPPONE reached on an error, but they couldn't capitalize, ending the game via the eight-run rule.

  • BROOKE BIAMONTE (0-1) took her first loss of the season, pitching 4.0 innings and allowing nine runs (five earned) on nine hits while striking out two.
  • LIZ MULLEN made her season debut in the circle, pitching the fifth inning and allowing one unearned run while striking out one batter.
  • Glynn, MOLLY COLLIGAN, and CARLEE IANNONE recorded Montclair's only hits.
  • Mullen and Casillas each stole a base.

Game 2: Montclair State vs. Rhode Island College

How It Happened

  • After a scoreless first inning and a half, an error allowed the Anchorwomen to take a 1-0 lead in the second.
  • Montclair responded in the fourth with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Iannone led off with a double to right-center and was replaced by Streppone as a pinch-runner. A fielding error allowed Boles to reach first and Streppone to score. Mullen and Colligan walked, followed by a bases-loaded walk drawn by KATIE BRUNNER to give Montclair the advantage.
  • Rhode Island answered immediately with a three-run fourth, scoring on an error, a sacrifice fly, and an RBI single to reclaim the lead at 4-2.
  • The Red Hawks fought back in the fifth when Alonso doubled and scored on an RBI double by Iannone, trimming the deficit to 4-3.
  • The Anchorwomen held Montclair to just two hits the rest of the way, securing the 4-3 victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Iannone led the offense, going 2-for-3 with an RBI double.
  • Alonso batted .500, finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored.
  • BELLA BUCY got the start, pitching three innings while allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and striking out three.
  • SAGE RIZZI (0-1) took the loss in relief, surrendering two runs on three hits while striking out one.
