Baseball Stages Two Out Rally in Eighth; Tops NYU 11-10

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team used a six-run eighth inning to storm back and defeat NYU 11-10 on Tuesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (10-6) fell behind in the first, as the Violets plated four runs on a pair of hits and walks along with three hit batters. Montclair leveled the contest immediately in their half of the first, as they put the first three batters on for JUSTIN KILYK, who tripled to right field to clear the bases and cut the margin to one. Kilyk took home on a wild pitch during the next at-bat, and with two runners in scoring position later in the frame, NYU escaped the jam with a strikeout.
  • NYU reclaimed the advantage in the top of the second, as a bases loaded single to center field drove in the go-ahead tally. A walk during the next at-bat brought in the second marker of the stanza. The Red Hawks put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half of the inning, but the Violets induced a fly out to end the rally attempt. The visitors tallied another pair of runs in the third to push the advantage out to five runs.
  • The Violets tacked on their final run of the day in the fourth, as a leadoff double down the right field line and a ground out led to a runner on third, which was plated on a sacrifice fly. Montclair answered in the bottom of the fifth, as CHASE FISCHER led off the stanza with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from MICHAEL MURPHY. Later in the inning, MATT SHUHET drove in Fischer on a single to left field.
  • Down five in the eighth, Montclair began to mount their rally, as Shuhet led off the frame with a single through the right side. A fielder's choice and a balk led to LUKAS EGENHAUSER on second, and after a lineout, ZACH STEARNS walked to force a pitching change. With two runners on, MARCUS JOHNSON doubled to drive in Egenhauser and force another pitching change.
  • Montclair continued the two-out push, as BILLY TIGAR singled to drive in two runs and advanced to second on the throw to make the score 10-8. Fischer singled to left field during the next at-bat to slice the deficit down to one, as Tigar came in to score. Murphy crushed a home run to left field to vault the Red Hawks into the lead, which they would not relinquish in the ninth, as COLIN BERNHARD retired the side in order.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Murphy has homered in back-to-back contests, with the go-ahead slam today marking the sixth of his collegiate career.
  • Kilyk led the way for Montclair with three runs batted in, marking his third contest with three or more RBI on the campaign.
  • Bernhard notched the second victory of his career, allowing only one hit over two and two thirds innings.
  • Montclair has won three consecutive games, coming back to take the lead in all three in the seventh inning or later.
FROM THE FIELD
