Men’s Lacrosse Holds Off Maritime, 10-9; Extend Win Streak to Six

Newark, Del. – The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team (7-1) secured a hard-fought 10-9 victory over Maritime, extending their winning streak to six games. Despite a late rally from the Privateers, Montclair held on to claim the win.

How It Happened

  • Montclair struck first on its opening offensive possession when CODY COOPER connected with ETHAN MOUNIER for the game's opening goal. Maritime quickly responded, tying the game 1-1 at the 9:33 mark. Both defenses stood firm for nearly seven minutes before Cooper found the net himself, giving the Red Hawks a 2-1 lead heading into the second quarter.
  • Early in the second quarter, MAX MOROSOFF capitalized on a failed clear attempt, firing a shot into the back of the net to extend Montclair's lead to 3-1 at 13:32. Despite both teams generating scoring opportunities, neither found the net for nearly 11 minutes. Montclair outshot Maritime 11-8 in the second quarter, with JULIAN VARONA scoring off another caused turnover with 2:49 remaining. The Red Hawks took a 4-1 lead into halftime.
  • Montclair opened the second-half scoring when Morosoff netted a goal off a JACK CLEARY assist. Maritime responded with two quick goals between the 7:55 and 7:48 marks, cutting the deficit to 5-3. Morosoff completed his hat trick off a pass from CORBIN QUINTERO, who recorded his first point of the season. As time expired in the quarter, Morosoff beat the buzzer with another goal, pushing Montclair's lead to 7-3.
  • The momentum carried into the fourth quarter as Morosoff extended the lead to 8-3 with an assist from WILLIAM BURDGE at the 11:01 mark. After both teams traded goals, Maritime mounted a comeback, scoring at 8:07 and adding three more goals between 6:42 and 4:49 to make it 9-8. The Privateers found the equalizer at 2:47, but a quick turnover off the ensuing faceoff led to another Morosoff goal, putting Montclair back in front 10-9. Maritime won the next faceoff and fired two shots—one missing high and the other saved by goalkeeper NICHOLI HALSE. A holding penalty gave Maritime a final chance in the last 14 seconds, but a turnover sealed Montclair's victory.

Inside the Numbers

  • Montclair's 7-1 start is its best since 2014, when the team finished 16-2 and won the Skyline Championship en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Morosoff had a career-best performance, scoring six goals—the highest single-game total by any Red Hawk this season.
  • Halse recorded 11 saves, reaching double digits for the fourth time this season.
  • Montclair capitalized on ball control, committing only nine turnovers compared to Maritime's 24.

From the Field

  • "It was a nice win for us. We didn't have our best game shooting the ball, but I'll give our guys credit for finding a way to win when things got a little shaky in the fourth quarter. We still have some things to clean up, but we're always grateful to get a win." – Head Coach Matt Poskay
