Baseball Surges Past Swarthmore, 11-4, to Earn Seventh Consecutive Victory

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University baseball team surged past Swarthmore 11-4 on Sunday night at Yogi Berra Stadium, earning its seventh consecutive victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (14-6) fell behind early, as the Garnet plated four runs in the top of the third. With runners on the corners and one out, Swarthmore plated a run on an error by the Red Hawks defensively. A bases loaded walk later in the stanza doubled the margin, and then a double during the next at-bat drove in two more runs to make the advantage four for the visitors. With two runners on in the bottom half of the frame, CHASE FISCHER drove in LUKAS EGENHAUSER on a single to left field to put the Red Hawks on the board.
  • Montclair rattled off five runs in the following stanza, a run kicked off by back-to-back hits from JUSTIN KILYK and MICHAEL MURPHY to lead off the inning. After CHRIS GONZALO reached on a fielder's choice, Egenhauser cleared the bases on a triple to right field to bring the Red Hawks within one. Levis tied the game during the next at-bat with a bunt that brought in Egenhauser from third. Later in the stanza, Fischer hit a bases-clearing single to right center that plated two more runs to vault Montclair in front, 6-4.
  • COLIN DOWLEN kicked off the fifth with a strikeout of the leadoff batter, and faced the minimum number of batters over the next two innings. In the Montclair half of the sixth, the Red Hawks added to their advantage. MARCUS JOHNSON doubled to center field and Fischer walked to put two on base for BILLY TIGAR, who singled to right field to drive in Johnson. Fischer came in to score on the next at-bat on a failed pickoff attempt at first to make the margin four.
  • During the next at-bat, Kilyk walked to force a pitching change for the visitors, and a double steal put two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch plated Tigar, and Murphy walked and took second which allowed Kilyk to score on the throw down to second to push the Red Hawk total to double-digits. Egenhauser singled through the left side later in the inning to plate the 11th run of the contest. JACK HAVESON entered the game in relief in the seventh and tossed the final three innings of the night, allowing just two baserunners to seal the victory for Montclair.
