Softball Stays Hot with Doubleheader Victories Against FDU-Florham

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State softball team (12-6) remained perfect at home and pushed its win streak to nine with doubleheader victories against FDU-Florham (10-8), 2-1 and 10-3 on Tuesday night.

Game 1

How It Happened

  • Montclair had FDU-Florham on the ropes early. A bunt single and an error put SOPHIA ALONSO and RILEIGH GLYNN for LIZ MULLEN to plate both of them on a two-RBI single through the left side for a 2-0 lead. The Red Hawks loaded the bases when CARLEE IANNONE was hit by a pitch and KATIE BRUNNER singled to left field but FDU was able to get out of the jam and keep the damage to a minimum.
  • Defense shone up until the fourth inning when, at the top of the frame, the Devils got on the board on an RBI double to left field and halved the Red Hawks' lead to 2-1.
  • It once became a defensive showing, taking the game to the top of the seventh. FDU threatened with a lead-off single through the left side and a sacrifice bunt that got on base due to an error. SAGE RIZZI put the game in a better position with two straight strikeouts to put FDU-Florham on its last out. A single to third loaded the bases, and it came down to a two-out full count to decide the game. The ball eventually was skied to centerfield, where Alonso secured the catch to keep Montclair undefeated at home.

Inside the Numbers

  • Mullen led game one on offense, batting 2-for-3 with two RBI.
  • Alonso and Glynn both batted 1-for-3 with a run scored. Glynn also led the team with two stolen bases while Alonso stole one.
  • Rizzi secured her fourth win of the season, pitching all seven innings and allowed only one run on seven hits and struck out four batters.

Game 2

How It Happened

  • The Red Hawks once again got going early with a three-run opening frame. Alonso led off with a single through the right side and was followed by a Mullen walk. Iannone plated Alonso on an RBI single through the left side. After JORDYN HESTER walked, a bases-loaded hit by pitch on DYLAN BOLES' at-bat, brought home the second run. She was followed up by AVERY MOCHRIE, who collected an RBI single to center field for the final run of the inning.
  • FDU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second when they scored on an RBI single down the left field line and a potential ground out that turned into an error, and made the score 3-2.
  • The Devils nodded the contest up in the top of the third on an RBI single to right center but the Red Hawks retook the lead in the bottom of the frame on a Hester home run that pushed them out in front 4-3.
  • Montclair went way out in front with a massive six-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 10-3 edge. Those runs were scored on two bases-loaded walks, a two-RBI double to left field by Boles, a wild pitch and an RBI single to center field by JAYLA VASQUEZ.
  • FDU collected a hit the int final inning but was unable to generate anything else and Montclair secured its fourth-straight home sweep.
