Men's Lacrosse Falls to #4 Christopher Newport in CLC Opener

Newport News, VA The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team fell to #4 Christopher Newport 15-9 on Saturday afternoon to open Coastal Lacrosse Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-3, 0-1 CLC) fell behind early in the contest, as the Captains netted the first two markers of the contest on back-to-back possessions within the first four minutes. Three minutes later, ETHAN MOUNIER ripped the first shot on goal, but the Captains increased their lead to three two possessions later. Montclair broke through at the 5:20 mark of the frame, as JACK CLEARY found MAX MOROSOFF for the visitors' opening goal. Christopher Newport tallied the final two tallies of the stanza to make the margin four after 15 minutes.
  • Christopher Newport accumulated the first four goals of the second quarter over its first eight minutes. Shortly after, SEAN STEPHENSON caused a turnover that led to a JULIAN VARONA strike on the ensuing possession to end the run. Morosoff found JOHN CRANK for a goal with 4:28 remaining in the half, but the Captains scored the final two markers of the frame to go into the break up eight.
  • Montclair began to cut into the deficit as the third quarter approached its halfway mark, as Cleary scored off a find from Mounier, and after LUCAS NOVACK won the resulting faceoff, HENRY NORDSTROM found the back of the net to cut the margin to six with 7:17 on the clock. After the Captains countered with a goal, the Red Hawks answered with one of their own as Mounier found Morosoff for his second of the day. Two and a half minutes later, JACKSON SIMONS found the back of the net to bring Montclair within five. The home side notched the final two goals of the quarter to go back up by seven with 15 minutes remaining.
  • The Captains struck 90 seconds into the final frame, but Varona answered two minutes later to keep the Red Hawks within striking distance. Montclair tallied three shots on goal down the stretch of the contest as both teams stood tall defensively. In the waning moments of the afternoon, Cleary found SEBASTIAN GRAZIANO with 14 seconds left to make the final score 15-9.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Morosoff and Varona led the way with a pair of goals each, marking Morosoff's eighth multi-goal performance of the campaign.
  • Cleary has tallied multiple assists in six games this season.
  • NICHOLI HALSE got the start in net for the Red Hawks and tallied four saves, with GIANNI GRAZIANO notching six stops.
