Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men's Lacrosse Falls to Mary Washington, 13-7

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University men's lacrosse team fell 13-7 to Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at Sprague Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (8-4, 0-2 CLC) opened the day with the first three shot attempts of the contest before the Eagles struck for the opening marker at the 10:42 mark of the first. The visitors forced a turnover on the ensuing possession, leading to their second goal of the day less than a minute later to double the advantage. Mary Washington strung together four more goals over a three minute span later in the stanza to push the lead to six with three minutes remaining.
  • The Eagles netted their final marker of the first with just over a minute on the clock, but the Red Hawks countered with their first strike of the day on a shot from JULIAN VARONA to make the margin six after 15 minutes. Both sides battled defensively over the first half of the second quarter, with the first goal coming at the 6:33 mark from Mary Washington. Two minutes later, Varona found ETHAN MOUNIER for Montclair's second goal of the game. Following a penalty on the Eagles, the Red Hawks capitalized with a man-up goal from SEBASTIAN GRAZIANO to make the halftime score 8-3.
  • Montclair tallied a pair of shots on goal in the early stages of the second half and broke through with six minutes remaining in the third as Mounier sent a feed to JOHN CRANK, who found the back of the net. The visitors responded with the final three goals of the quarter, notching all seven shots across both teams during that stretch.
  • Varona kicked off the fourth quarter with an unassisted marker on the first possession of the stanza. Approaching the eight minute mark of the contest, a man-up opportunity for the Red Hawks was capped off by a goal from CODY COOPER off a feed from JACK CLEARY to trim the margin to five. Mary Washington countered shortly after with a marker of their own, but Cooper found the back of the net once again with 4:41 remaining on another man-up opportunity to once again cut the margin to five. The Eagles tightened up defensively, allowing just one shot over the remainder of the game and capping off the afternoon with a marker with just under 90 seconds left.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Cooper's pair of goals marked his second multi-goal performance in his last three games, with Varona netting two goals in back-to-back games.
  • Cleary led the way with three assists for the Red Hawks, his fourth game this season with at least three. Mounier has tallied multiple assists in back-to-back games and four times during the 2025 campaign.
  • NICHOLI HALSE got the start in net for the Red Hawks and tallied a career-high 19 saves. Defensively, CORBIN QUINTERO notched four caused turnovers, one off his season-high.
FROM THE FIELD

"Unfortunately our slow start really ended up being the difference today. We found ourselves down early and could never really hold enough momentum to make a run. Mary Washington is a very good team and we can't let them have that kind of a lead that early in the game." - Head Coach Matt Poskay

UP NEXT

The Red Hawks will continue Coastal Lacrosse Conference play with an in-state matchup against Stockton on Senior Day on Saturday, April 12. Opening faceoff from Sprague Field is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
