Baseball Takes Down NJCU 6-2 Behind Haveson's Complete Game

Montclair, NJ Behind a complete game performance on the mound by JACK HAVESON, the Montclair State University baseball team took down New Jersey City University 6-2 on Thursday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (21-11, 7-4 NJAC) fell behind in the opening stanza, as the visitors loaded the bases on the first three batters of the day. After a pop-out and strikeout, an error led to the game's opening tally. Montclair countered immediately in the home half of the inning, as JARED LEVIS led off with a single to right center and stole second during the next at-bat. ZACH STEARNS moved the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt, and MARCUS JOHNSON brought Levis home on a groundout to level the game.
  • NJCU reclaimed the lead in the third, as a single to left field plated a runner from second base. The Red Hawks equalized once again in the same stanza, as LUKAS EGENHAUSER reached on an error to lead off the inning that allowed him to advance to second. After a sacrifice bunt to move Egenhauser to third, Levis used a ground ball to first to drive in the tying run.
  • Haveson retired nine of the next 10 batters that he faced, keeping the contest level until the Red Hawks broke through in the sixth. Johnson singled to kick off the frame, and CHASE FISCHER walked to put two runners on for BILLY TIGAR, who used a pinch-hit sacrifice bunt to move both runners. MICHAEL MURPHY ripped a single to left field during the next at-bat to clear the bases and give Montclair a two-run advantage.
  • Later in the inning, Egenhauser singled up the middle with two runners on to drive in Murphy from second to push the margin to three. Montclair got their final run of the day during the next at-bat on a sacrifice fly from CHRIS GONZALO. Haveson retired the side in order in the seventh, and worked around a leadoff double in the eighth by setting down the next three batters. NJCU put a runner on second with two outs in the ninth, but Haveson shut the door with a flyout to end the contest.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Johnson and Levis led the way offensively for Montclair, each notching a pair of hits. Levis increased his hitting streak to 11 games and has reached base safely in each of Montclair's last 15 contests. He has recorded a multi-hit performance in five of his last seven appearances.
  • Murphy tallied his sixth multi-RBI game of the campaign with a pair on his single in the sixth.
  • Haveson earned his third victory of the season, striking out four and allowing just five hits over nine innings. The complete game marked the first of his collegiate career, joining PATRICK CUCCURULLO as the two Red Hawks to go the distance on the mound this season.
  • The Red Hawks are 16-4 at home this season and have won 72 games at Yogi Berra Stadium dating back to the beginning of the 2021 campaign.
