Wayne, NJ – The Montclair State University softball team (22-12, 8-6 NJAC) was blanked at home on Saturday by visiting Kean (20-16, 10-4 NJAC), 9-0 (6 Inns.) and 4-0 in its NJAC doubleheader.
Game 1
How It Happened
- The Red Hawks drew first blood with a run in the opening frame when SOPHIA ALONSO singled to right field, advanced to second on a ground out, and then completed her trip around the bases on a JORDYN HESTER RBI double to center field for a 1-0 lead.
- William Paterson struck back in a big way in the bottom of the second with a four-run inning that put them up 4-1. They scored runs on an RBI ground out, a two-RBI double, and an RBI single to center field.
- With one out in the top of the third, RILEIGH GLYNN was walked and stole both second and third to put herself in scoring position for LIZ MULLEN to get a sacrifice fly out to center field and cut the lead in half.
- Montclair brought themselves within one score in the top of the fifth inning. With one out again, Glynn got on base, this time on a single to center field. She stole second and advanced to third on a groundout to the shortstop. A double to center field by Mullen, collected the RBI and put the game at 4-3.
- William Paterson had opportunities to score in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, but left a total of four batters on base for Montclair to try and put themselves in front heading into the top of the seventh.
- Facing two outs, Glynn once again got on base with a walk and stole second, but the Red Hawks were unable to drive her all the way home and fell in game one.
Inside the Numbers
- Four different Red Hawks had hits in the game with Hester and Mullen having the extra-base hits for Montclair. Mullen led the team with two RBI.
- Glynn reached three times in the game and stole a total of four bases to put her at 28 on the season and 57 in her career. She also scored two of the three runs in the game.
- SAGE RIZZI suffered the loss in the circle. She pitched all seven innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. She also struck out three batters.
Game 2
How It Happened
- The Red Hawks kicked off game two with a pair of runs. Glynn and Alonso each opened up with singles and advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Mullen. CARLEE IANNONE belted a ball to center field that snuck past the center fielder and plated both runners for a 2-0 lead.
- A two-out error led to the Pioneers notching a run to cut the lead to 2-1.
- Montclair doubled down again in the top of the third. Glynn led off with a single to right field and stole second. Alonso followed up with a bunt single to move Glynn to third and stole second. Iannone once again came through for Montclair with a two-RBI shot up the middle to push the score out 4-1.
- In the top of the fourth, the Red Hawks saw another duo of runs. Faced with two outs, Glynn singled through the left side and stole second. Alonso cracked a ball to left center for an RBI triple. After a Pioneer pitching change, the first pitch went over the catcher's head, and Alonso scored on a wild pitch to put Montclair out in front, 6-1.
- The Pioneers finally got themselves back in the score column at the bottom of the fifth. They scored on an RBI single up the middle.
- Montclair found another run at the top of the fifth inning. Iannone was walked in the lead-off and replaced on base by GIANNA STREPPONE. A wild pitch sent Streppone to second, and she completed her trip around the bases on an RBI single to center field.
- The Red Hawks put themselves into a run-rule mercy position in the top of the sixth with three runs to get the score to 10-3. Julia Luzack reached on an error by the shortstop and was replaced on base by MADISON LEECH. Leech stole second, and a single by Glynn put runners on the corners. Mullen bunted and reached on a fielder's choice who attempted to get Leech out at home but Leech out ran the throw for the score. Iannone once again came up big with a two-RBI single to right center to plate the final two runs. The defense did its job in the bottom of the frame and Montclair came away with a 10-2 win.
Inside the Numbers
- Iannone had a monster game-two, going 3-for-3 with six RBI.
- Glynn was a perfect 4-for-4 with four runs scored in the contest.
- Alonso hit 3-for-4 with an RBI and her sixth triple of the year.
- CHEYANNE WEIGAND up'd her record to 8-3 with a win today. She pitched all six innings and allowed only one earned run on five hits and struck out four batters.
