Baseball Falls to Rutgers-Camden in Extra Innings in NJAC Tournament

Montclair, NJ The fourth-seeded Montclair State University baseball team fell in extra innings to sixth-seeded Rutgers-Camden, 12-8, on Saturday evening at Yogi Berra Stadium on the second day of the 2025 New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (24-16-1) fell behind in the top of the first, as a fielding error placed a runner on second for the Scarlet Raptors, who used a single to left field two at-bats later to score the contest's opening run. Montclair countered immediately in the home half of the frame, as CHASE FISCHER singled through the left side to plate JARED LEVIS from third.
  • Rutgers-Camden reclaimed the lead in the third on a home run down the left field line and doubled the advantage in the next stanza on a single through the left side to score a runner from second. The visitors broke the game open in the sixth, plating five runs on five hits to make the score 8-1. COLIN DOWLEN entered the game in relief and recorded the final out of the inning before the game was delayed two hours due to inclement weather.
  • After the game's resumption, the Red Hawks began to chip away at the deficit, as BILLY TIGAR homered to right field in the bottom of the sixth for Montclair's second run of the day. In the seventh, MARCUS JOHNSON tripled down the right field line, leading to another tally as MILES FEASTER grounded out to drive him in.
  • Montclair mounted a game-tying rally in the eighth with two outs. With runners on first and second, MICHAEL MURPHY singled to left center to cut the margin to four, plating Fischer from third. LUKAS EGENHAUSER doubled to left center during the next at-bat to bring home Tigar, and Johnson singled during the next at-bat to drive in two runs to make it a one-run contest. Later in the inning, Levis walked with the bases-loaded to level the contest at eight, but the Scarlet Raptors recorded the inning-ending out on a strikeout.
  • The visitors reclaimed the lead in the extra innings with a bases-loaded single to left field, and utilized three consecutive hits to make the score 11-8. A wild pitch with the bases loaded during the next at-bat increased the margin to four. Rutgers-Camden retired the side in the bottom of the 10th to seal the victory and advance in the competition.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Johnson led the way with three hits and two runs batted in, matching his season-high in hits. Murphy notched a pair of hits to finish the campaign with a five-game hitting streak, driving in a run in each of Montclair's last four games.
  • With his hit in the first inning, Levis increased his on-base streak to 22 games dating back to March 21, accumulating 11 hits over his last five games. He has driven in seven runs over his last five contests.
