Men's Soccer Surges Past Rhodes, 4-1

Sewanee, TN The Montclair State University men's soccer team surged past Rhodes College 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (1-0-1) started hot offensively, as DANNY TOBON ripped a shot towards the top of the net that had to be saved by the Lynx keeper in the 10th minute. Shortly after, JAKE WINCHOCK notched an attempt on from that was collected once again by Rhodes.
  • Montclair broke the scoring open in the 27th minute, as CARLOS BEDOYA served an in-swining corner kick that was initially cleared by the Lynx, but not out of the box as Winchock flicked a header to Tobon who rocketed a ball past the keeper. 
  • The Red Hawks doubled their advantage nine minutes later, as KEVIN CONTRERAS surged down the field on a counterattack and played the ball to Winchock, who had his shot rebound back to Contreras, who ripped a right-footed shot into the back of the net.
  • Montclair added to their lead less than 10 minutes into the second half, as Tobon collected a ball that bounced off the foot of a defender and tucked a shot past the keeper coming off the line to attempt and make a save.
  • Rhodes recorded their lone goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute on a long rebound following an initial shot on goal. The Red Hawks answered with their final strike of the game in the 85th minute, as LOGAN NENO looped a ball on a free kick to JAYDEN WESLEY, who maneuvered along the near-side edge of the box and tucked a shot into the near corner.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Tobon's brace marked the first for a Red Hawk since September 14, 2024, when SAMUEL EPITIME tallied two goals against Carnegie Mellon.
  • The goal for Contreras was the second of his Montclair career, with Wesley recording his first.
  • Winchock notched his second career assist on the day, with Neno tallying his first.
  • DIESEL FIORE notched his first victory of the season in net for the Red Hawks, amassing four saves.
  • The four goals for Montclair was the most since October 12, 2024, when it recorded four against Rutgers-Newark.
  • The Red Hawks held a 17-7 advantage in shots, including a 8-5 mark on goal.
