Montclair, NJ – Behind a penalty kick goal in the 87th minute, the #19 Montclair State University men's soccer team took down Vassar 1-0 on Saturday night at MSU Soccer Park.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Red Hawks (5-0-2) registered the first attempt on goal in the ninth minute, as KEVIN CONTRERAS surged towards the edge of the box and fired a shot that was collected by the keeper. Three minutes later, DANNY TOBON turned inside the box and tried to tuck a shot towards the near post that was also collected by the Brewers.
- Vassar began to push offensively in the latter stages of the opening half, as a corner kick led to a shot on frame later in the sequence that DIESEL FIORE had to collect in the 36th minute. Four minutes later, the visitors registered another attempt, sailing out to the right. Fiore notched another stop with just over a minute on the clock to maintain the scoreless margin going into the half.
- Montclair aimed to break the contest open in the 56th minute, as JAKE WINCHOCK ripped a shot that was parried away by the Vassar keeper. Winchock recorded another attempt on goal shortly after that was also collected by the visitors. The Brewers recorded an attempt on the ensuing possession, but could not generate another until the 77th minute.
- With seven minutes remaining, the Red Hawks registered five consecutive corner kicks, applying pressure to the Vassar defense. In the 87th minute, JAKE WINCHOCK fired a shot that took a deflection off a defender for the Brewers, resulting in a handball. SEBASTIAN LAPCZYNSKI stepped up to the spot and slotted a shot towards the low right corner of the net, breaking through for the game's only goal.
