Field Hockey Upended by #2 Christopher Newport, 5-0

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (2-6) was upended by nationally ranked #2 Christopher Newport (8-0), 5-0, on Homecoming Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair went on the attack off the first whistle, collecting three penalty corners and three shots off of them, including a shot from SADIE EICHLIN that was on goal but denied by the CNU goalkeeper. The Captain's then controlled the tempo for the rest of the period. SYDNEY WHITE made three stops between the fourth and seventh minutes. In the ninth minute, Christopher Newport had a penalty corner opportunity and fired a shot at SYDNEY WHITE, who made the save, but could not recover quickly enough off the rebound, and CNU put in the first goal at 9:46 to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The second period was all CNU, who blanked Montclair with zero shots. The Captains scored similarly as the first goal in the 20th minute of the game when a shot and a save were collected and put in off the rebound to take a 2-0 lead. The lead was extended to 3-0 just about a minute and a half later when a CNU player collected a ball off a Montclair defender in the arc and fired a ball into the top right of the cage.
  • Christopher Newport kept the pressure going right out of the halftime intermission. In the 32nd minute, the Captains played a ball into the arc and a good pass found its way right into the cage in front of White and was touched past her for a 4-0 edge. The only offensive opportunity for Montclair happened in the 38th minute, when MARISSA CRAIG took a great shot, but had it saved, and the game went 4-0 into the final period.
  • CNU put the exclamation point on an emphatic win, when they were awarded a penalty corner and fired in a shot off a pass from the top of the key and went up 5-0. COLLEEN MCGAVIN and BELLA HEISER each saw shots down the stretch, but were unable to capitalize, and the game went final.
