Field Hockey Wins Shootout Thriller Against Kean on Senior Day

Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (5-6, 2-1 NJAC), facing a two-goal deficit deep into the third quarter, found the goals they needed and took Kean (6-4, 1-2 NJAC) to the edge and came away with a 3-2 win after a penalty shootout thriller on Saturday's Senior Day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SYDNEY WHITE anchored the defense right away, stopping multiple early shots and standing tall against a heavy flurry of Kean penalty corners to keep things scoreless through the opening frame.
  • After Kean kept on the attack with a wave of penalty corners, the Cougars broke the scoreless deadlock at 25:31. The Red Hawks immediately responded with a flurry of late penalty corners and a dangerous shot from BELLA HEISER just before the break.
  • Coming out of the half, Kean extended their lead to 2-0 when a goal was scored at 38:13. Montclair answered right back as the quarter wound down, with MELISSA BICKFORD rocketing home a crucial goal at 44:37 off an assist from Heiser to ensure Kean wouldn't get the shutout, making it a 2-1 game right before the buzzer.
  • Montclair completely took control of the attack, firing a wave of shots that hit the post and forced tough saves. The relentless pressure finally broke through at 50:12 when AVERY DIPIETRO capitalized on a helper from JOEY MAYER to tie the game at 2-2, completing the comeback to force overtime.
  • Overtime turned into a defensive chess match and a penalty corner battle. SYDNEY WHITE stood strong through two extra frames, turning away a heavy volume of shots and penalty corners, while Montclair generated overtime looks from BELLA HEISER and EMMA BIANCO to force a shootout.
  • In a dramatic shootout finish, KASEY WATSON, JULIA RANSKI, and BELLA HEISER all buried their penalty attempts, while SYDNEY WHITE shut the door to seal the thrilling win for the Red Hawks.

INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Montclair went to penalty shootout for the first time since 2019, when they saw back-to-back shootout wins on October 4 (4-3 vs Muhlenberg) and October 5 (1-0 vs. York)
  • SYDNEY WHITE put on a masterclass in the cage, topping her career-high saves with 23. That topped the 21 she had last week against Stockton and stands as the fourth-best single-game mark in program history.
  • MELISSA BICKFORD and AVERY DIPIETRO provided clutch regulation scoring, while KASEY WATSON, JULIA RANSKI, and BELLA HEISER delivered under pressure in the shootout.
  • Before the game, the Montclair State University field hockey team honored its three seniors for their contributions on and off the field for the program. Those seniors were NATALIE SURMA, KASEY WATSON, and JULIA RANSKI.
