Field Hockey Secures 3-0 Shutout at William Paterson

Wayne, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (4-6, 1-1 NJAC) secured its first conference win of the season with a 3-0 shutout victory at William Paterson (1-9, 0-2 NJAC) on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Montclair came out pushing the pace right away, testing the defense with an early shot from AVERY DIPIETRO and earning a penalty corner. NATALIE SURMA kept the pressure on with another strong look on target, keeping the offense clicking through a scoreless first.
  • The Red Hawks completely took over the momentum by pouring on the attack with a flurry of penalty corners. Surma broke through the scoreless deadlock at 21:55 by burying the game's opening goal off a crisp assist from EMMA BIANCO.
  • Coming out of the half, Montclair wasted no time getting back to work. After getting some great looks and earning more corners, COLLEEN MCGAVIN finally broke through at 38:16, burying one off a nice feed from DiPietro. The Red Hawks kept right on rolling, and just before the horn sounded, SAM SUBOKOW tipped in another gorgeous helper from Bianco to stretch the advantage to 3-0.
  • Even with a solid lead, Montclair kept the pedal down and completely dictated the pace. The offense kept the pressure dialed up by drawing a steady stream of penalty corners, letting loose with hard shots from JOEY MAYER, Surma, and KELSEY MORRA to head home with their first conference win of the season.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Three different Red Hawks found the back of the cage, including Subokow who scored her first collegiate goal of her career.
  • EMMA BIANCO finished with two assists, which was a career high.
  • White had a light day on the defensive end, earning the shutout while facing one shot, which she saved.
  • Montclair dominated the day with 16 shots to William Paterson's one. They also outproduced them in penalty corners, 14-1.
  • The Red Hawks extended their win streak against the Pioneers to 15 straight games. The all-time series sees the Red Hawks ahead 56-23-4
FROM THE FIELD

  • "Tonight was an example of the intensity and execution that is needed to be successful in NJAC field hockey. I thought we did a great job moving the ball through the midfield, attacking from different angles and earning quality circle entries throughout the game. Congratulations to Samantha Subokow on her first career goal. We are excited for our next NJAC opponent on Saturday." Head Coach Eileen O'Reilly

UP NEXT
  • Montclair returns home this Saturday, October 10th at 11:00 AM to host Kean for Senior Day.
