Baseball Edged by Stevens, 6-5

Washington, D.C. The Montclair State University Baseball team was edged by Stevens 6-5 on Friday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (3-1) kicked off the night with a leadoff single from JARED LEVIS, who advanced to second during the next at-bat on a passed ball. After MICHAEL WANSAW JR. reached on a dropped fly by the catcher, BILLY TIGAR notched a hit to center field to load the bases. Right after, ZACH STEARNS brought in Levis from third on a groundout to break open the scoring. COLIN DOWLEN punched out the first two batters of the home half, retiring the side in order.
  • DANNY O'BRIEN led off the second frame with a single to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from DYLAN BRIGGS. That set the table for Levis later in the inning, who plated O'Brien on a single and advanced to second on a throwing error. Dowlen continued his strong start to the night, working around a leadoff double from the Ducks by setting down the next three at the plate and struck out the side in the third inning to hold the margin at two.
  • Montclair tacked on another run in the fourth, as Levis doubled to right field to drive in Briggs from second base, advancing to third on the throw. Stevens was able to escape the jam with just the one run, and would load the bases with two outs in their half of the stanza before Dowlen generated a grounder to halt the potential rally. Stearns singled to left field in the fifth, with the Red Hawks loading the bases shortly after with Kaliske getting hit by a pitch and O'Brien drawing a walk. During the next at-bat, Briggs reached on an error that allowed two runs to score and vault the lead to five runs at the midway point of the night.
  • Stevens broke through with a pair of runs in their half of the inning on a double to center field, and crept to within two in the sixth on a throwing error that brought in a runner from third. Remaining in the sixth, the Ducks popped into a double play that allowed another run to come in from third to make it a 5-4 game going into the seventh. A hit batter in the home half of the seventh to lead off the stanza would later advance to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, with a single during the next at-bat leveling the contest at five. The Ducks walked off the contest in the ninth with a pair of runners on and one out, as a single to left field would clinch the game for Stevens.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Levis led the way offensively for the Red Hawks with a trio of hits and a pair of runs batted in, including his first extra base hit of the campaign.
  • Tigar tallied his second multi-hit performance of the season, bringing his hit total to a team-leading six through four contests.
  • Stearns has driven in at least one run in all four games this season for Montclair. O'Brien, in his collegiate debut, reached base safely twice with a hit and walk.
  • Dowlen recorded five innings on the mound for the Red Hawks, striking out eight batters.
FROM THE BALLPARK

"We need to do a better job once we have a lead protecting it and extending it. The margin for error is always small on Friday nights, and the little things we need to be better on to win that game." - Head Coach Dave Lorber
