Baseball Continues Hot Streak at the Plate; Tops MIT 16-3

Montclair, NJ Recording a run in every inning, the Montclair State University Baseball team surpassed MIT 16-3 in the second game of a three-game series at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (10-3) fell behind in the opening frame, as three consecutive singles loaded the bases for MIT right away. Montclair turned a double play during the next at-bat 5-2-3, but a double to right field would plate a pair of runs for the visitors. JARED LEVIS kicked off the home half of the first with a double to left field, and after ZACH STEARNS drew a walk, BILLY TIGAR singled through the left side to drive in Levis to cut the deficit in half. CHASE FISCHER pounded a single through the right side to plate Stearns, as Tigar would come home during the next at-bat on the throw down to second on a stolen base from Fischer. The final marker of the first came on a RBI single from DANNY O'BRIEN to push the home side in front, 4-2.
  • Montclair added to its lead in the second, as Tigar singled to center field with the bases loaded to bring in LUKAS EGENHAUSER and Levis. During the ensuing at-bat, a double play would plate another tally to make the difference five. In the following stanza after a solo homer from MIT, MATT KALISKE notched a leadoff walk, leading to a double down the left field line from JOHN TOMSHO to bring in the eighth run of the day. Following consecutive flyouts, Levis recorded a single up the middle to drive in Tomsho to expand the gap to six.
  • Tigar walked to kick off the bottom of the fourth and would advance to third on a pair of wild pitches. Later in the frame, O'Brien plated him on a groundout to increase the Montclair total to double-digits at 10-3. Continuing their offensive push in the fifth, the Red Hawks would put the first two batters on, both in scoring position on a combination of stolen bases and a balk. Egenhauser notched a run batted in on a groundout, and with the bases loaded, an error by the left fielder would bring in another pair of runs to make the difference double-digits at 13-3. With Tigar at second and two outs, Fischer singled to right field to bring in the 14th tally of the day.
  • MIT threatened in the sixth, drawing back-to-back walks to kick off their half of the inning. COLIN BERNHARD halted the threat, recording three-straight strikeouts. In the Montclair portion of the inning, Egenhauser singled to right field with two runners in scoring position to plate the final two markers of the day. Bernhard tallied another pair of punchouts in the seventh to seal the 16-3 victory and clinch the series for the Red Hawks.

FROM THE BALLPARK

"Happy to clinch the series with the victory, CHRIS MATESIC battled on the mound and we got another solid overall performance. Our offense picked up right where it left off yesterday, and I was pleased with the approach we had at the plate to record another double-digit run output. We will focus on coming out strong tomorrow in hopes of securing a series sweep." - Head Coach Dave Lorber
