Baseball Surpasses New Paltz 16-4 as Wansaw Sets Program Triples Record

Montclair, NJ MICHAEL WANSAW JR. collected a program record three triples as the Montclair State University Baseball team surpassed New Paltz 16-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (12-3) fell behind in the first as New Paltz stole home on an attempt from Montclair to back-pick a runner at first base. A single and a walk loaded the bases for the visitors, leading to a sacrifice fly to double the advantage. Montclair provided an immediate response in the home half of the opener, as ZACH STEARNS blasted a two-run home run over the left field fence to equalize two batters in. BILLY TIGAR tripled to center field right after, and following a hit batter, DANNY O'BRIEN singled through the left side to push the Red Hawks in front. Wansaw notched the second triple of the inning for Montclair to clear the bases, and JAXON GRANT drove him in from third to make the score 6-2.
  • A sacrifice bunt moved Grant to second, and a walk and hit batter loaded the bases for Tigar. Following a pitching change, a balk brought in another tally, and following a walk to re-load the bases, a wild pitch increased the difference to six. New Paltz trimmed the deficit in the top of the second on a double and triple to get their third marker of the day. A groundout during the ensuing at-bat brought them within four, but a throwdown to second from Grant later in the frame halted the rally.
  • Montclair added to their lead in their half of the third, as JARED LEVIS led off the stanza with a single up the middle. Stearns was hit by a pitch, and with CHASE FISCHER getting hit by one later in the inning, the bases were loaded for an O'Brien sacrifice fly. Fischer took second during the next at-bat, with Stearns coming in to score on a wild pitch to push Montclair into double-digits at 10-4. The home side tacked on another in the fourth, as Wansaw led it off with his second triple of the day to put a runner in scoring position for LUKAS EGENHAUSER, who singled on a bunt attempt and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher, allowing Wansaw to come in and score.
  • LOGAN SHUMARD entered the game and retired the side in order, leading to another innings in which the Red Hawks generated runs at the plate. With two outs, back-to-back walks and a wild pitch placed two runners in scoring position. After Wansaw walked to load the bases, JOEY NOLAN drew a walk after a nine-pitch at-bat to push the score to 12-4. Tigar notched an RBI single in the sixth to increase the lead to nine, and with two more runners in scoring position, O'Brien recorded another sacrifice fly to make the margin double-digits. JOHN TOMSHO ripped a single through the left side to notch a run batted in, as Wansaw hit his final triple of the day to plate the final tally of the day for the Red Hawks, who sealed the game in seven innings.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Wansaw set a program record for triples with three, becoming the first Red Hawk to record multiple in a game since Phillip Scott on March 10, 2017. His three runs batted in also marked a new career-best, with his four hits overall a new high for the senior.
  • Tigar tallied another pair of hits to go along with an RBI, increasing his hitting streak to 24 games dating back to April 18, 2025. During that stretch, he has amassed 49 hits and 40 RBI, leading the New Jersey Athletic Conference in both categories this season.
  • O'Brien tallied his second-straight multi-hit performance and third of his collegiate career. He has recorded a hit in 11 of his 12 appearances as a freshman, including a nine-game hitting streak.
  • Tomsho has recorded a hit in six consecutive contests, with Egenhauser notching one or more in each of his last five.
  • Stearns has driven in a pair of runs in back-to-back games and three of his last four for Montclair.
  • MATT KING got the start for the Red Hawks, tossing four innings and striking out four batters to earn his second win of the campaign.
  • Montclair tallied their sixth consecutive performance with double-digit hits and runs. Over their last nine games, they have collected 124 runs on 122 hits.
  • The Red Hawks are 83-22 at Yogi Berra Stadium since the beginning of the 2020 season and a perfect 8-0 during the 2026 campaign. Montclair has won six-straight games overall, their longest stretch of the year.
