Bullpen Shines as #29 Baseball Rallies for Walk-Off Victory Against Maritime, 5-4

Montclair, NJ The #29 Montclair State University Baseball team rallied from down three to take down Maritime in extra innings, 5-4, on Tuesday afternoon at Yogi Berra Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (15-4) fell behind in the opening stanza, as Maritime capitalized on a walk and error that allowed a runner to come around and score. After a single through the left side put runners on the corners, a groundout plated a second tally to double the advantage for the visitors. Montclair cut into the deficit in the home half of the third, as JARED LEVIS drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. During the next at-bat, ZACH STEARNS drew a walk to set up BILLY TIGAR, who ripped a single up the middle to put the home side on the board.
  • BRENDAN ROCHE, who entered the game in relief in the first, worked around a runner in scoring position in the fourth with just one out, as he generated a groundout and strikeout to maintain the margin. Montclair threatened again in the fourth, as JOHN TOMSHO tripled to right center and MATT KALISKE reached after being hit by a pitch. The Privateers escaped the two-out, two-runner jam with a fielder's choice to hang onto the lead.
  • Maritime expanded their lead in the seventh, notching a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to drive in their third run of the day. During the next at-bat, a fielding error would allow another tally to come home, pushing the gap to three. Montclair answered immediately in the bottom of the seventh, beginning with a leadoff double to center field by Kaliske. LUKAS EGENHAUSER punched a single to right field during the next at-bat, leading to a hit through the right side from Levis to plate Kaliske. Stearns utilized a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position for Tigar, who drove in Egenhauser on a groundout to slice the deficit to one.
  • The Red Hawks found the equalizer in the bottom of the ninth, setting up the rally with a leadoff walk from Egenhauser, who advanced to second on a wild pitch. Levis pushed Egenhauser to third on a sacrifice bunt, forcing a pitching change from Maritime. Following the break, Stearns pushed a single up the middle to drive in the runner from third, forcing extra innings. PATRICK TEEHAN entered from the bullpen gates, recording a trio of strikeouts in the top of the 10th, and would continue his day into the 11th, retiring the side in order. In the home half, JOEY NOLAN moved a pair of runners into scoring position with just one out. After Maritime intentionally walked Tigar, DYLAN BRIGGS recorded a pinch hit sacrifice fly to drive in the game-winning run.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Briggs followed up his strong appearance on Sunday with the game-winning run batted in, his seventh of the campaign.
  • Tigar finished with a pair of hits and runs batted in, increasing his hitting streak to 28 games dating back to April 18, 2025. During that stretch, he has amassed 55 hits and 44 RBI, leading the New Jersey Athletic Conference in both categories this season.
  • Levis tallied his second-straight multi-hit performance and ninth of the year, driving in his 17th run of the campaign. Stearns has notched a hit in each of his last six games.
  • Tomsho continued his offensive tear at the plate, extending his hitting streak to 10 games and recording his sixth career extra-base hit. He has reached base safely in 10 of his 11 career collegiate appearances.
  • The Montclair bullpen put together another stellar afternoon, kicked off by Roche's four and a third innings. The junior did not allow a hit while striking out three batters. CHUCK ENNIS entered for him, tossing the next four frames (a season-high) and collecting four punchouts. Teehan earned his fifth career victory on the mound, striking out a season-best five over the final two innings.
  • The Red Hawks are 86-23 at Yogi Berra Stadium since the beginning of the 2020 season, including a 11-1 mark this year. Their walk-off victory marked the second of the campaign, with the first coming against Stevens on February 28.
FROM THE BALLPARK

"Another fantastic job by the bullpen today. The combination of BRENDAN ROCHE, CHUCK ENNIS, and PATRICK TEEHAN recorded key outs and held the game to allow time for our offense to chip away. At the plate, we really dug in and recorded some crucial hits that allowed us to come back. Credit to DYLAN BRIGGS, who stepped in ready to go and recorded the game-winning sacrifice fly." - Head Coach Dave Lorber
