Women’s Lacrosse Races Past Lycoming, 19-3

Williamsport, Pa. – The Montclair State University women's lacrosse (2-1) had its foot on the gas from the opening whistle and played a complete game to race out to a 19-3 win on the road at Lycoming (2-3) on Saturday.

How It Happened

  • The Red Hawks were hot off the first draw, scoring on the first possession when SOPHIA PICCINICH found CARA MCCARTNEY for the first goal of the game just 49 seconds in.  Two more successful draw wins set up two more goals from NORAH MONAGHAN and AMRA LUKOVIC to put Montclair up 3-0 in the first two minutes of the contest. Montclair picked up a green card, but was able to kill the penalty and flip momentum back with a goal at the 11:55 timestamp from Piccinich. Montclair kept Lycoming off the scoreboard in the first and found two more goals from KYRA MORENA and another from Monaghan to hold a 6-0 lead entering the second quarter.
  • Montclair kept the pressure up, but the Warriors saw some key saves early in the second frame. The Red Hawks got the ball back into their end, and after a few wide shots inside 12 minutes in the period, LEXI ROBINSON found the back of the net to extend the lead to seven. Lycoming ended its scoring drought at the 9:04 timestamp, but two quick goals from Monaghan and Kaely Sek pushed the Red Hawk lead out to 9-1 with 7:45 remaining in the half. The Warriors bet shot at scoring in the second quarter came shortly at 6:58, but was saved by JOEY GROTKOPF. With under three minutes remaining, Sek scored two goals, and ASHLEY CASTILLO notched one in succession, and Montclair commanded a 12-1 lead into the second half.
  • Coming out of the halftime intermission, Montclair went right back to work with Robinson opening the scoring at the 13:35 mark. The Warriors countered with two goals between the 11:25 and 8:52 marks to cut the lead to 13-3. They tried to go back on the attack, but Montclair caused three turnovers on each of Lycoming's possessions. Montclair saw two more goals in the final two minutes of the third, one from Monaghan and one from Castillo, with 20 seconds left to carry a 16-3 advantage into the final quarter.
  • Lycoming went on the attack first in the fourth, but a save from LEA HEGEWALD stopped their only shot of the quarter. It wasn't until the 5:09 timestamp that a free-position attempt was buried by Piccinich. McCartney sank another one late in the quarter, and another Castillo goal with 20 seconds remaining capped off the dominant 19-3 victory.
