Women's Lacrosse Secures Senior Night Victory; Surges Past Ramapo 19-6

Montclair, NJ The Montclair State University Women's Lacrosse team surged past Ramapo 19-6 on Senior Night at Sprague Field on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Hawks (4-4, 1-1 NJAC) tallied a trio of shots on goal in the opening six minutes of the contest before LEXI ROBINSON opened the scoring on a feed from CARA MCCARTNEY. Three and a half minutes later, JOEY GROTKOPF notched a save on a free-position shot, leading to a goal from McCartney on the other end to double the advantage. After securing the draw control, the Red Hawks found the back of the net on a marker from KAELEY SEK with 5:37 on the first quarter clock. Ramapo struck for their first goal of the night on the next possession, as Montclair capitalized on a man-up opportunity with a strike from McCartney, who scored again with just under three minutes on the clock to make the score 5-1 after 15 minutes of play.
  • Two minutes into the second stanza, AMRA LUKOVIC ripped a shot past the goalkeeper to push the lead to five, with ASHLEY CASTILLO notching an unassisted goal 90 seconds later to keep the offensive push rolling. The Montclair defense forced five turnovers from the Roadrunners over the next four minutes, leading to a pass from DANIELLE DE JESUS to Sek, who scored to nudge the lead to 8-1 with 7:40 remaining in the half. Montclair tallied a trio of shots, including a pair on goal, during the remainder of the half, but Ramapo struck with just under two minutes to make the margin at the break six.
  • Montclair added to their advantage in the beginning stages of the third period, with Lukovic tallying an unassisted strike before KYRA MORENA found the back of the net on the next possession off a pass from McCartney to push the home side into double-digits. Ramapo trimmed the margin to seven on a man-up goal, with Sek striking right back on an opportunity for the Red Hawks at the eight-minute mark. A minute later, Lukovic scored again following a Ramapo turnover, as KAYDRIANA TOLEDO pushed the margin to double-figures with 4:53 on the clock. Robinson slotted a pass to Lukovic shortly after for another goal, as SOPHIA PICCINICH and McCartney scored in the waning moments of the quarter to make the score 16-3.
  • 96 seconds into the final quarter, MIA CUCCINELLO found Robinson for a strike to push the gap to 14, as the Roadrunners would tally a pair of goals off turnovers over the ensuing four minutes. At the 7:40 mark, a turnover from Ramapo would lead to a possession for the home side where Castillo placed a pass for Piccinich, who found the back of the net. Ramapo countered on the next possession, with Cuccinello scoring on a free-position attempt with just over three minutes remaining to make the final margin 19-6, securing the senior night victory.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
  • Lukovic poured in a season-high four goals while matching her season-best of five points, while tallying nine draw controls and three ground balls. McCartney recorded a season-high eight points, collecting four goals and three assists.
  • Sek notched her second hat trick of the campaign along with an assist, with Robinson collecting a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Piccinich's two goals marked her second career multi-goal performance.
  • Grotkopf and LEA HEGEWALD each tallied a pair of saves in net for the Red Hawks.
  • Montclair outshot Ramapo 37-12, holding a 28-9 advantage in shots on goal. Defensively, the Red Hawks helped force 26 turnovers from the visitors.
  • The 19 goals from Montclair matched its season-high, which it set on three occasions.
  • The Red Hawks honored nine seniors before the game - Grotkopf, Hegewald, SAMANTHA HANDZO, Lukovic, ERIN MEO, NORAH MONAGHAN, De Jesus, LUCIANA FERRARA, and Robinson.
