Montclair, NJ – The Montclair State University field hockey team (1-4) battled DeSales (2-2) on Wednesday night on Rick Giancola-Sprague Field, where an early goal pushed the Bulldogs to a win over the Red Hawks, 1-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· DeSales went on the early advantage with a pair of shots three minutes in. One of them came off the corner and was denied by SYDNEY WHITE. COLLEEN MCGAVIN fired off the first shot for Montclair at the 5:27 mark. Montclair got another good look on a penalty corner at 7:36. Bell Heiser had a nice look, but had it saved. DeSales broke through with less than two minutes remaining, when a Bulldog player weaved through traffic into the arc and rocketed a shot into the back of the cage for a 1-0 lead.
· Montclair seized early possession and rattled off three shots on goal in the first three minutes of the second period. McGavin and MELISSA BICKFORD created those looks. The Red Hawks kept the Bulldogs shut out on offense for the entire quarter while searching for a goal. In the final minute of the half, KASEY WATSON pushed the ball to EMMA BIANCO for a shot, but the ball missed the mark, and the game went 1-0 into the half.
· White made a pair of early stops at the beginning of the third period. Both sides struggled to generate any looks, with no shots being taken after the 32:26 mark in the quarter. DeSales clung to the lead entering the fourth.
· The Red Hawks saw a few opportunities to equalize the game in the final frame. The best opportunity came off a corner, where the ball got worked back to McGavin, who tried to chip it in, but was stopped by the DeSales goalkeeper. AVA SCURRY had a pair of shots at 52:40 and 53:12, but both missed the mark. The Red Hawks had possession in the final minutes of the game, but the Bulldogs' defense held firm and kept Montclair off the board for the win.
INSIDE THE RESULTS
· Despite the loss, Montclair outproduced DeSales in offensive output. They scored 13 shots (eight on goal) to DeSales' six (four on goal). They also generated nine corners to DeSales' four.
· McGavin led the offense with three shots on goal.
· White went the distance but suffered the loss. She collected three saves in the game
