Hamman Pitching, Gallagher Power Lift Montclair Over RPI

Red Hawks Win Streak Goes to Six in 12-3 Victory

Little Falls, NJ – Senior designated hitter GEORGE GALLAGHER belted a homer and drove in four runs to back an outstanding effort from sophomore lefty COREY HAMMAN as Montclair State extended its winning streak to six with a 12-3 victory over RPI at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.

Hamman struck out 12 over seven innings as the Red Hawks lifted their record to 9-2-1. Gallagher finished 3-for-4 with junior third baseman CRAIG CONWAY going 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Gallagher put Montclair on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single that scored junior second baseman DAVE WURST. MSU added four runs in the third for a five-run advantage. Sophomore right fielder CHRIS BARAN doubled to drive in JEFF SCHRIBER and Conway lofted a sacrifice fly before a Gallagher RBI single extended the lead to 4-0. Junior center fielder FRANK LONGO came home on a wild pitch for the final run.

The Engineers (8-5) cut into the deficit with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to get within 5-2.  The Red Hawks answered quickly in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on RBIs by FRANK FRANCIA and BRIAN ELLERSON pushing the lead back to 7-2.

Montclair State put the game away in the seventh with five runs, the first coming off the bat of Gallagher, who blasted a two-run homer, his sixth of the season. Junior pinch-hitter SCOTT ALLAN added a run-scoring triple and scored on a wild pitch for an 11-2 lead. Wurst's fielder's choice delivered the final run for Montclair.

Juniors JIM WHALEN and STEVE TRONGONE finished up Hamman's start allowing an unearned run over the final two innings.

MSU is back at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday, March 28 hosting Wilmington College (DE) at 3:30 pm.
