Little Falls, NJ – It took two years to get his revenge, but Montclair State junior lefty
SCOTT ALLAN did just that on Wednesday as the Red Hawks rolled past No. 1 Eastern Connecticut, 9-3 at Yogi Berra Stadium.
Allan (4-0) pitched seven strong innings as he erased a pair of losses to the Warriors (19-3) in the 1998 NCAA Division III World Series, including a 16-1 setback in the national title game. Allan allowed three runs and seven hits, striking out five and walking three.
Allan's effort was back by 12 hits from the Red Hawks (19-3-1), who won their sixth consecutive contest.
CRAIG CONWAY went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI.
CHRIS BARAN,
BRIAN ELLERSON and
FRANK FRANCIA had each had two hits and a run batted in.
The Red Hawks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
DAVE WURST walked to open the inning and Barn followed with a base hit. Conway brought both of them home with a double into left-center field. Following a pair of outs, Ellerson doubled to left for the final run.
Baran made it a 4-0 game in the second with a sacrifice fly and Montclair added three runs in the third for a 7-0 advantage. A fielding error helped score the first run with
JEFF SCHRIBER lifting a sac fly for the second. Wurst added an RBI single making the score 7-0.
Francia's infield single and a
MARC HOUSER sacrifice fly in the fourth put Montclair up 9-0 and the rest was left to Allan, who kept ESCU off the board until the sixth inning.
Sophomore lefty
COREY HAMMAN struck out the side in the eighth and
GREG BELSON tossed a scoreless ninth to close out the game.
The Red Hawks will have the day off on Thursday before returning to the diamond on Friday, April 14. MSU heads to Mahwah to face Ramapo in an NJAC matchup at 3:30 pm. It will be the second meeting between the two with Montclair State posting an 8-2 victory at home on March 31.
