Bridgewater, VA – Senior designated hitter
SCOTT ALLAN belted a pair of home runs as Montclair State took the first game of its weekend series at Bridgewater College, knocking off the Eagles, 10-4 on Saturday.
Senior third baseman
CRAIG CONWAY and junior shortstop
BRIAN ELLERSON each homered as the Red Hawks squared their record at 5-5.
Playing in Virginia for the second consecutive weekend, MSU showed no travel lag from its long trip, scoring four times in the first inning.
DAVE WURST walked to lead off the inning and stole second before coming around to score on a
CHRIS BARAN double to left field. Conway followed with a two-run shot making the score 3-0.
BRIAN ELLERSON reached on an error and scored on another later in the inning for the final run.
The Eagles got a run back in the second as Chris Woody led off with a solo home run which was answered by Montclair in the third as Allan recorded the first of his two home runs, an opposite-field shot to left-center.
With Montclair leading 5-1 in the fifth, Bridgewater struck back and closed within a run on an RBI ground out from J.P. Estes. The Red Hawks gained some breathing room in the sixth as
SCOTT CLARK came around to score on a double by Wurst, who crossed the plate on Baran's run-scoring single putting MSU up 7-4.
Ellerson and Allan went back-to-back for home runs in the seventh, increasing the lead to five.
GEORGE BECKER lofted a sacrifice fly in the ninth for the final Montclair State run.
Junior lefthander
COREY HAMMAN (2-3) went the first six innings for the victory. Hamman allowed four runs (three earned) and five hits, striking four and walking two.
JOSH PINE,
JEFF GOGAL and Conway each tossed a scoreless inning to close out the game.
Baran finished 3-for-4 with Wurst, Conway and Allan each collecting two hits.
The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Sunday, March 18 at 1:00 pm.
