Center Valley, PA – Once again, rain took center stage in baseball game involving Montclair State and DeSales University.
Last May in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Red Hawks battled back from an early 10-0 deficit, taking the lead in the seventh inning before rain forced the game to be halted and suspended for nearly three days before it was resumed. Montclair State would go on to win the contest, 14-11.
This year, there was rain but no three-day delay and in the end the result was the same – another Montclair victory.
Junior shortstop
BRIAN ELLERSON and senior catcher
JEFF SCHRIBER each homered as the Red Hawks made it three straight victories with a rain-shortened 5-0 win over the Bulldogs. Freshman left-hander
JEFF GOGAL (5-1) struck out nine and allowed three hits in the shutout win as MSU raised its record to 17-8 on the year.
Schriber led off the second inning with an opposite-field, solo home run giving MSU a 1-0 lead. The Red Hawks added to the lead in the third with three runs.
CRAIG CONWAY doubled in
DAVE WURST, who led off the inning with a base hit. Ellerson then belted a three-run homer to left giving Montclair a 4-0 advantage.
SCOTT CLARK, who finished 2-for-2 at the plate, drove in the final MSU run with an RBI single in the sixth. The game was then called before the Bulldogs could come to bat in the bottom of the inning.
Montclair State continues its schedule of seven games in six days on Wednesday, April 18 in Jersey City as they face the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University. First pitch of the NJAC contest at the Thomas M. Gerrity Complex is set for 3:30 pm.
