Little Falls, NJ – Senior center fielder
SCOTT CLARK belted a three-run homer to highlight a seven-run seventh inning as Montclair State rallied past Rowan University, 11-8 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Senior third baseman
CRAIG CONWAY went 3-for-4 and became the all-time hits leader in school history as the Red Hawks (24-8, 14-1 NJAC) posted its 10
th straight win and 18
th time in the last 20 games. Rowan fell to 19-12, 6-7 in the league with its second loss to MSU this season.
Montclair State led 3-1 after four innings, but the Profs took the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Doug Scott brought home the first run with a fielder's choice and Bob Dacierno tied the game with an RBI single. Tim Stazewski scored on an errant pickoff throw to give Rowan the lead with Pat Vengenock's infield single scoring the final run giving the Profs a 5-3 advantage.
CHRIS BARAN delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, however Rowan countered with three in the seventh for an 8-4 lead. Keith Smicklo drove in two with a base hit and later scored on a wild pitch.
The Red Hawks then erupted for seven runs in the seventh, sending 11 batters to the plate.
SCOTT ALLAN singled with one out and went to second on a balk. After
JEFF SCHRIBER walked, Baran doubled bringing both home to cut the lead to two.
SEAN MORRISON made it an 8-7 contest on an RBI double before Clark put MSU back on top with his homer over the left field wall as MSU led 10-8.
ADAM CERMINARO bounced a single through the left side for the final run.
Conway, the 10
th batter of the inning, singled back through the middle with two outs. It was the 260
th hit of his career, surpassing John Pallino (259 from 1991-94) for the all-time lead. He finished 3-for-4 at the plate.
Right-hander
JOSH PINE made that 11-8 lead hold up as he shut down Rowan in the final two innings, completing an outstanding relief effort. Pine (2-1) recorded the final nine outs allowing just one it with a pair of strikeouts and two walks. Jeff Klaber (1-1) suffered the loss for Rowan.
Cerminaro, Allan, Baran, Morrison and Clark each had two hits for the Red Hawks.
Montclair State will head back out on the road on Friday, April 27 for its next game. MSU takes on The College of New Jersey in Ewing, NJ at Ackerman Park with first pitch of the NJAC contest set for 3:30 pm.
