CRAIG CONWAY drove in three runs while senior designated hitter
SCOTT ALLAN added two RBI and a home run as Montclair State kept up its offensive pace of later in an 11-4 triumph over Division II Adelphi University on Tuesday.
Senior second baseman
DAVE WURST went 3-for-4 with four runs scored for the Red Hawks (9-6), who recorded 11 runs for the third straight contest. Montclair also improved to 14-13-1 overall in the all-time series with the Panthers (9-11-1), including wins in each of the last five contests.
Adelphi jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Erik Pelkaus doubled home the first run and scored one batter later on an error. Montclair State answered with a run in the bottom half on a Conway single and took the lead for good in the third with four runs.
GEORGE BECKER, Wurst and
CHRIS BARAN opened the inning with singles, loading the bases. Conway lofted a sacrifice fly and Ellerson followed with another putting the Red Hawks up 3-2. Allan crushed a two-run homer putting MSU up by three.
Another three-run inning in the fourth extended Montclair's lead. Wurst drove in the first with a single and a fielding error allowed Becker to cross the plate making the score 7-2 before
BRIAN ELLERSON singled home Wurst.
Conway drove home Wurst with a triple in the sixth and scored on a wild pitch extending Montclair State's lead to 10-3.
ANTHONY SHOVLOWSKY brought in the final MSU run in the eighth on a fielder's choice.
Junior left-hander
RYAN COSTELLO, making his first start of the season, pitched the first five innings to earn his first victory of the year. Costello allowed two unearned runs and three hits with five strikeouts and a walk.
Montclair State now turns its attention to conference play as the Red Hawks head to Glassboro, NJ for its first NJAC game of the year on Thursday, April 5. MSU takes on Rowan University at 3:30 pm.
