Montclair Shuts Out Rowan in NJAC Opener, 8-0

Glassboro, NJ – Junior left-hander COREY HAMMAN and reliever Kevin Rakowski combined on a three-hit shutout as Montclair State opened up its New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule with an 8-0 victory over Rowan Unviersity on Thursday afternoon.

Four different players drove in two runs apiece as the Red Hawks (10-6, 1-0) made it four straight victories while registering their first shutout of the season and first against the Profs since a 10-0 victory at home on May 6, 1969, a span of 79 games.

Montclair's No. 2-7 hitters combined to go 12-for-28 with all eight RBI and five extra-base hits with all nine starters registering at least one hit in the game.  Senior center fielder Frank Long led the offensive charge with three hits and two RBI. BRIAN ELLERSON and SCOTT ALLAN each had two hits and two RBI with catcher JEFF SCHRIBER driving in two.

Meanwhile, Hamman (4-3) shut down Rowan allowing three hits with eight strikeouts and two walks through the first 8 1/3 innings before Rakowski came on to close out the contest.

The Red Hawks snapped a scoreless game in the third inning as it scored five times on six consecutive hits. Longo had the first, a one-out infield single, and went to third when CRAIG CONWAY doubled down the left field line. Ellerson followed with a RBI single for the game's first run. He would steal second and came around to score with Conway as Allan went the opposite way with a double down the left field line.

CHRIS BARAN kept the inning going with a single that moved Allan to third base. Schriber then smacked a triple to right-center driving in both runners as Montclair State led 5-0.

Longo would do further damage in the sixth with a two-run triple that scored Wurst and GEORGE BECKER. Becker kept the inning alive with a two-out single with Wurst adding one of his own before Longo's big hit. Longo would be involved in MSU's final score in the ninth, crossing the plate on an Ellerson double to left center.
