Montclair Sweeps Past Kean, Runs Winning Streak to Six

Montclair, NJ – Senior center fielder SCOTT CLARK delivered the game-winning RBI in the 11th inning of the opener and junior shortstop homered and drove in three runs in the nightcap as Montclair State swept past Kean University in an NJAC doubleheader at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday.

Freshman left-hander JEFF GOGAL tossed his first career complete game in the second contest as the Red Hawks (12-6, 3-0 NJAC) captured the twinbill 2-1 and 7-1 to extend its winning streak to six games. Kean dropped to 10-9-1, 2-4-1 in conference place.

In the opener, Kean starter John Woodhull and Red Hawk lefty RYAN COSTELLO hooked up in an old-fashioned pitcher's duel although neither got would factor in the decision. Woodhull came within an out of a complete-game shutout victory instead settling for an 8 2/3 innings performance. He allowed eight hits and a run with four strikeouts and two walks. Meanwhile Costello gave up a run and four hits in 10 innings as he struck out seven and walked one.

The Cougars snapped the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning. Paul Crivello singled in the infield to open the inning and came around to score as John Pederson doubled up the game in right-center for the game's first run.

Woodhull continued to keep the Red Hawks off the board, including a big strikeout with the tying run on third to end the eighth and retired the first two in the ninth. But MSU rallied. Catcher JEFF SCHRIBER walked and was replaced by pinch-runner MATT BECHT. ADAM CERMINARO followed with a base hit and SCOTT CLARK walked to load the bases.

Bobby Black was summoned from the bullpen, however, he issued a free pass to DAVE WURST as Montclair State knotted the game at 1-1.

Neither team would mount a threat in the 10th and Montclair reliever Kevin Rakowski set Kean down in order in the top of the 11th. In the bottom of the inning, CHRIS BARAN led off with a double to right field and went to third on an ERIC CANTAGALLO sacrifice. Black walked Cerminaro before Clark laid down a bunt for an infield single scoring Baran with the winning run.

Rakowski got the victory to up his record to 2-1. Jonathan Huff, who entered in the 10th inning took the loss as he fell to 2-1. Clark, FRANK LONGO, Conway and Baran had two hits apiece for Montclair.

The nightcap started off much the way of the first with neither team scoring in the first four innings. Kean would get to Gogal in the fifth as Pederson led off with a double down the right field line. After moving to third on a sacrifice, Mike O'Donnell singled to right scoring Pederson for a 1-0 Cougar advantage.

But the Red Hawks answered immediately in the bottom of the inning. Becker walked and Wurst was hit by a pitch. Baran moved both runners up with a sacrifice with Conway tying the game on an RBI single. Three pitches later, Ellerson un-tied it with a three-run homer to left putting the Red Hawks in front 4-1.

MSU would add to the lead in the seventh as FRANK LONGO singled, driving in Conway, who opened the inning with a base hit. The Red Hawks added their final two runs in the ninth, the first coming on a Schriber leadoff homer to left. Clark's fielder's choice plated the final run.

Gogal (3-1) struck out seven and walked three as he scattered seven hits in his complete-game effort that included 10 ground outs with the Red Hawks turning two double plays. Keith Barber (3-2) took the loss.
