Orange, CA - Sophomore lefthander
JEFF GOGAL (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) pitched seven strong innings as Montclair State, ranked fourth in Division III, snapped its two-game losing streak with a 6-2 victory over UMass-Dartmouth at Hart Park on Thursday afternoon.
Freshman
TOMMY WARTH (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus) and junior Shawn Dyckma (Spotswood,NJ/Spotswood) each had an RBI for the Red Hawks (5-3), who improved to 3-3 on their West Coast trip. MSU completes the trip on Saturday against No. 3 Chapman in a rematch of their NCAA World Series game last year. Montclair won that game, 5-1.
UMass-Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as Tom Jachimczyk singled home a run against Gogal. However, Montclair got the run back in the second as
ADAM CERMINARO (Wall, NJ/Wall) scored after Warth's ground ball was misplayed.
In the third, MSU scored four times thanks in part to three UMass-Dartmouth errors.
JOSH MORRISON (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata) reached on an error and
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) walked.
CHRIS MAYO (Kearny,NJ/Kearny) then laid down a bunt single that was thrown away allowing Morrison and Boyd to score. Dyckman then lofted a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. After a single and another error, Warth grounded a single for a 5-1 MSU advantage.
The Red Hawks score their final run on a
CHRIS BARAN (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) RBI triple in the fifth.
That was enough for Gogal (3-0), who allowed just one hit over his final six innings. The lefty retired the final nine batters he faced. Gogal struck out seven and walked one.
Mayo and Baran each had two hits for the Red Hawks.
