Late-Inning Rally Lifts Montclair State by RPI

Little Falls,NJ - Freshman centerfielder ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy,NJ/Perth Amboy) and junior third baseman ADAM CERMINARO (Wall, NJ/Wall) each drove in two runs during an eight-run seventh inning as fifth-ranked Montclair State rallied for a 10-8 victory over 12th-ranked Rensselaer in NCAA Division III baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

CHRIS BARAN (Cranford,NJ/Cranford) homered and drove in two runs for the Red Hawks (9-5),who rallied from a 5-1 deficit and sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh inning. DAN QUINN (Albany, NY/Colonie) had a homerun and two RBI for RPI (9-5).

Cerminaro began the rally in the seventh as he singled to leadoff the inning. JOSH MORRISON (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata) then doubled and both came around to score as Boyd line a double down the left field line cutting the MSU deficit to 5-3. After a walk to CHRIS MAYO (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), BRIAN ELLERSON (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic) laced a double to bring Montclair within a run. Baran then lofted a sacrifice fly to tie the game. MICHAEL ALLAN (Glen Gardner, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional)put MSU ahead with an RBI double and Cerminaro made it 8-5 as he singled through the right side, driving in two. Morrison capped off the scoring with an RBI single for a 9-5 Montclair advantage.

Rensselaer would get back within 9-7 in the eighth as MATT FARAONE (Suffern, NY/Suffern) tripled in a run and RYAN WITHERTELL (Westfield, MA/Westfield) added an RBI single. But Baran pushed the lead back to 10-7 in the bottom half of the inning as he belted his first homer of the season.

JOSH PINE (Trenton,NJ/Steinert) picked up the victory in relief to improve his record to 2-0 on the season. JAMES SUROWIEC (Sparta, NJ/Sparta) allowed a homer in the ninth, but retired the side for his first save of the season. JUSTIN PAPPAS (Farmingdale, NY/Chaminade) took the loss(1-1). Pappas allowed three runs and two hits as he faced only three batters.

Faraone had two hits for RPI, as did Gianoni and Quinn. Boyd, Ellerson, Cerminaro and Morrison each had two hits apiece for the Red Hawks.
