TCNJ Pushes Past Montclair State, 11-6

Little Falls, NJ - Senior Nick Maddelena (Leonardo, NJ/Middletown South) recorded his eighth save of the season, and 11th in his Lions' career as The College of New Jersey picked up their second win of the season against the Red Hawks 11-6 in New Jersey Athletic Conference baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium on Friday afternoon.

Maddalena now holds TCNJ's record for career saves with 11 breaking the old record of ten set by John Capuano (1986-1989).

Greg Martinez (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) finished with a 1-3 performance and three RBI for the Lions. ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) led the Red Hawks with a 2-5 day and three RBI.

Montclair State headed into the top of the 5th ahead 1-0 before the Lions sent 13 batters to the plate, resulting in a 7-1 lead. Bob Capaldo (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater) and Steve Czajka (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After loading the bases on a hit-by-a-pitch, Jamie Riese (Hamilton Square, NJ/Steinert) then tied the game with an RBI hit-by-a-pitch of his own. Chris Schoonhoven (Middletown, NJ/Middletown North) then singled across the go-ahead run for a 2-1 score. After taking advantage of three RBI walks in the inning, Sergio Sencion (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) rounded out the scoring with an RBI single for the 7-1 advantage.

The Red Hawks battled back narrowing the margin to 7-6 with the aid of three runs in the bottom of the 6th. Boyd drove in two with his third triple of the season while teammate CHRIS BARAN (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) followed with an RBI single. But that's as close as MSU would get as TCNJ added two runs in the 8th off an RBI single by Capaldo and a throwing error by the infield.

Brad Downs (Pennington, NJ/Hopewell Valley) improved to 2-1 as he picked up his second victory over Montclair. Downs allowed five runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings of work while striking out five. Kevin Rakowski (Rockaway, NJ/Morris Hills) suffered his third loss of the season, 2-3, allowing six runs on five hits in four innings. Maddalena earned his eighth save in 3 1/3 innings of relief, he gave up one run on three hits, striking out three and walking four.
