Wayne, NJ - Junior catcher Ryan Stanek (Berkeley Heights, NJ) hit a walk-off home run to win Game 1 in the 11th inning and junior southpaw Dan Singer (Ridgefield Park, NJ) improved to 4-0 with his first complete game in the nightcap, as William Paterson scored a rare sweep of Montclair State, 11-10 and 4-1, on Saturday at Wightman Field.
With the loss, Montclair State is now mathematically eliminated from the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament. MSU has made the NJAC Tournament each year since it's inception in 1990, and the conference post-season since 1982. The Red Hawks' hopes of a NCAA post-season appearance are now also in question, MSU has made the NCAA Regional Tournament each year since 1982.
In the opening game, both teams traded rallies. Montclair State led most of the way before William Paterson scored three times in the bottom of the eighth on run-scoring hits by senior third baseman Dan Sherlock (Hopatcong, NJ), junior shortstop Dan Suarez (Jersey City, NJ) and junior first baseman Mark Kalish (Northvale, NJ). However, Montclair State tied the score at 10-all when freshman center fielder
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ) came across on a wild pitch by WPU reliever Mat Sackman (Ramsey, NJ).
Sackman eventually picked up the win, though, when Stanek crushed a one-out solo home run to left field off sophomore reliever Ric Haas (Annandale, NJ), who dropped to 2-3. Meanwhile, Sackman improved to 3-1 after scattering three hits across three scoreless innings. Sherlock went 4-for-5 with three runs and two RBI, Suarez went 4-for-6 with a run and an RBI and junior right fielder Bryan Graham (Medford, NJ) went 4-for-5 with three runs and three RBI.
For the Red Hawks in Game 1, Boyd went 5-for-6 with three doubles, a triple, four runs and two RBI. Junior first baseman
JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (East Brunswick, NJ) went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while junior catcher
SHAWN DYCKMAN (Spotswood, NJ) and sophomore shortstop
P.J. BACCARELLA (Bayonne, NJ) each had two hits apiece for Montclair State.
The Pioneers took the nightcap as Singer improved to 4-0, scattering nine hits and one run while walking two and improving two. William Paterson scored twice in both the first and fifth innings, with Graham stroking a two-run single in the fifth for the game's big hit. Kalish went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Sherlock went 2-for-4 with a run scored for the Pioneers.
For Montclair State, senior right fielder
CHRIS BARAN (Cranford, NJ), Dyckman and Giacomiazzio all had two hits apiece. Senior southpaw
COREY HAMMAN (Flanders, NJ) fell to 6-2, allowing nine hits and only two earned runs in going the distance for the Red Hawks.
