Union, NJ - Catcher
SHAWN DYCKMAN (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood) went four-for-five with four RBI as the Red Hawks defeated Kean University 14-6 this afternoon in game #1 of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) baseball action.
Kean University's junior right-hander Steve Bucchignano (South Plainfield, NJ) allowed four runs while striking out eight batters for a complete game victory as the Cougars defeated Montclair State University 7-4 in game #2 for the split of this afternoon's matchup.
The Red Hawks opened up a 7-0 lead in game #1, scoring single runs in the first and the second and adding five runs in the sixth inning, the big impact off an RBI bases-clearing single by Dyckman. The Cougars were able to rally with three runs in their half of the sixth on a three run homerun by Felix Urena (North Bergen, NJ) and then scored three more in the seventh to cut the deficit to 7-6. However, MSU put the game out of reach with six runs in the eighth inning which included an RBI double by senior GEORGE BECKER (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and a 2 RBI single by freshman
TOMMY WARTH (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus).
JEFF GOGAL (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) improved to 5-0 tossing 6 and 1/3 innings allowing five runs, one earned, on three walks and 12 strikeouts. Picking up his first save of the year was sophomore Ric Haas (Annandale, NJ/North Hunterdon) who pitched 2 and 2/3 innings allowing one unearned run on two strikeouts while walking one.
In game #2, the Red Hawks battled back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the eighth inning at four with a solo shot off the bat of
BRIAN ELLERSON (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic), his third of the year, and an RBI single from Warth. But the Cougars rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to overtake the Red Hawks for the first time since 1998.
Suffering his first loss of the year was senior
JOSH PINE (Trenton, NJ/Steinert). Pine allowed three runs, one earned, in 1/3 of an inning of work.
Offensively for MSU Ellerson finished 3-3 with an RBI and a homerun in game #2, while teammate Warth was 2-3 with 2 RBI and his third homerun on the season.
