Little Falls, NJ - Junior leftfielder
FRANK SEMPLENSKI (Livingston, NJ/Gov. Livingston) lined a one-out double down the left field line to score the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Montclair State rallied for a 4-3 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University in NCAA Division III baseball action at Yogi Berra Stadium this afternoon. Both teams came into the game tied for fifth in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division III national poll.
Freshman centerfielder
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) began the MSU rally in the 10th as he grounded a single through the left side with one out. Pinch-hitter
JOSH MORRISON (Middlesex, NJ/Immaculata) then drilled a double to left scoring Boyd to tie the game at 3-3. The Warriors (18-4-1) then intentionally walked
BRIAN ELLERSON (Bayonne, NJ/Hudson Catholic) bringing up Semplenski, who delivered his game-winning hit off JEREMY HALL (Northfield, VT/Northfield).
Eastern Connecticut took the lead in the top half of the inning as EUGENE JULIEN (Brockton, MA/Brockton) tripled with one out. After an intentional walk to JOHN KUBACHKA (Glastonbury, CT/Xavier), DWIGHT WILDMAN (Seymour, CT/Seymour) singled to left field for the 3-2 lead.
Ellerson (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Red Hawks (16-5) as he recorded the final out of the 10th inning. THOMAS SPIRITO (Canton, CT/Canton) took the loss. Spirito (0-1) allowed both 10th-inning runs as he registered just one out.
Lost in the extra-inning affair was a solid pitching matchup between the Red Hawks'
COREY HAMMAN (Flanders, NJ/Roxbury) and the Warriors' ADAM CZERWINSKI (Somers, CT/Somers). Hamman went eight-plus innings allowing two runs and eight hits. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Czerwinski held MSU hitless until the fourth and allowed just four hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Montclair State took a 2-1 lead in the sixth as
JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) belted a solo homer, his fifth of the season. The Warriors then tied it in the ninth as JOEY SERFASS (Newington, CT/Newington) singled to lead off the inning and pinch-runner SIMON HUNT (Berlin, CT/Berlin) scored on INAKI ORMAECHEA (New Britain, CT/New Britain) RBI single. Ellerson had a sacrifice fly to put MSU up 1-0 in the first, but ECSU tied it in the third on Julien's sacrifice fly.
