Little Falls, NJ - Senior leftfielder BRETT MUNCH (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) went 4-for-5, homered and drove in three runs as York College (PA) used a seven-run second inning en route to a 14-6 victory over Montclair State in an NCAA Division III baseball contest at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday evening.
ASHLEY SWOPE (Manchester, PA/Northeastern) also had three RBI for the Spartans (26-10), who have won 13 of their last 15 contests.
CHRIS BARAN (Cranford, NJ/Cranford) and
P.J. BACCARELLA (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) each had two RBI for the Red Hawks (21-14), who have lost six straight games tying the school record set during the 1962 season.
York broke open the contest in the second as they scored seven runs off MSU starter
COREY HAMMAN (Flanders, NJ/Roxbury) - all with two out. Swope began the scoring with a two run double and MATT DAY (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) singled home a run for a 3-0 lead. JOHN PAUL GALLO (North Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood Catholic) added a run-scoring single to made it a four-run lead before TRAVIS GAIDOS (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) doubled home two runs. Gaidos capped the scoring as he stole third and scored as the ball was thrown into left field.
SCOTT SCHLAFER (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) picked up the victory. Schlafer (5-1) went five innings allowing three runs (one earned) and seven hits. He struck out two and walked one. Hamman (6-3) suffered the loss allowing nine runs (six earned and 10 hits in five innings. The lefty struck out six and walked one.
Gaidos and LUKE PILE (Woscosville, PA/Somerset Area) each had two hits for the Spartans, who had 17 in the game.
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) and
BRIAN ELLERSON (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) each had two hits for Montclair State.
