Little Falls, NJ - Junior shortstop
MIKE WEISS (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Regional) belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning as Montclair State salvaged a 4-4 tie with Wilmington College (DE) at Yogi Berra Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. The game was called after nine innings due to darkness.
Wilmington pitcher Tom Gallagher (Bear, DE/Glasgow) was three outs away from a complete game as he scattered six hits through the first eight innings. But in the ninth, MSU's
DANNY RODRIGUEZ (Monmouth, NJ/South Brunswick) led off the frame with a line single and Weiss crushed a 2-1 pitch from Gallgaher deep over the left-centerfield fence to tie the game. It was Weiss' first round-tripper of the year.
The Red Hawks (4-7-1) then had an opportunity to win the game as
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) singled with one out and moved to second as
BRIAN BUTLER's (Wyckoff, NJ/Ramapo) grounder was misplayed putting runners at first and second. However reliever Pete Henyan (Corning, NY/Corning East) got out of the inning by inducing two ground ball outs. The game was then called.
Gallagher helped his own cause in the fifth inning as he belted a three-run homer off
KRIS BOHNBERGER (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) to give the Wildcats (10-7-1) a 3-1 lead. Wilmington then extended the lead to 4-1 in the eighth as catcher Brian Fulcher delivered an RBI single. Montclair State answered in its half of the inning as
JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) drove in a run with a base hit.
Gallagher pitched 8 1/3 innings allowing four runs on nine hits. The righthander struck out six and walked two. Bohnberger went 5 1/3 innings surrendering three runs and seven hits, striking out four and walking three.
Kevin Murphy (Hockessin, DE/William Penn) was 3-for-4 for Wilmington while PJ Baccarella (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) and Weiss each had two hits for Montclair State. Boyd was 1-for-4 as he extended his hitting streak to 15 games dating back to last season.
