Little Falls, NJ - Second baseman Nick Urbanovich (Rutherford, NJ/St. Peter's Prep) and catcher Keith Smicklo (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) each had two RBI in the opener and Tom McCullen (Tuckerton, NJ/Holy Spirit) pitched eight strong innings in the nightcap as Rowan University swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader with Montclair State, 9-4 and 4-3 at Yogi Berra Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
B.J. White (Waynesboro, VA/Howell) had a homer in Game #1 as Rowan (20-7, 11-4) won for the third time in its last four games.
JOE GIACOMIAZZIO (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had four hits and two RBI in the twinbill for Montclair State (12-14-1, 7-6 NJAC), which had its three-game winning streak snapped following the loss in the first game.
In the first game, Rowan led 3-1 in the fifth before scoring six times. Smicklo drove home a run with a sacrifice fly and shortstop Brent Dempsey (Haddon Heights, NJ/Haddon Heights) brought home a run with a fielder's choice and a second run scored on an error. Nick Ciconte (Gibbstown, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) added an RBI double and Urbanovich plated two more with a single as the Profs built a 9-1 lead.
Lefthander Josh Schwartz (Wenonah, NJ/Gateway Regional) went 8 1/3 innings allowing four runs and 10 hits with nine strikeouts and three walks as he improved to 6-0 on the season.
JAMES CARIELLO (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) took the loss (0-2). Urbanovich was 4-for-5 for Rowan while Giacomiazzio and
ETHAN BOYD (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy) each had two hits for Montclair State.
In the second game, McCullen stayed unbeaten as he hurled the first eight innings allowing five hits and two runs (one earned). McCullen (5-0) struck out four and walked three as he escaped several jams. Jim Gendaszek (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview) got out of a ninth-inning jam to earn his first save of the year.
JAY COOK (1-3) took the loss for Montclair State.
Trailing 4-2 in the ninth, the Red Hawks loaded the bases with no one out as
MIKE HALLIGAN (Pompton Plains, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and
MIKE WEISS (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape Valley) singled to start the inning. Pinch-hitter
MARC DECASTRO (Haddon Heights, NJ/Paul VI) walked to load the bases, but Gendaszek got
DANNY RODRIGUEZ (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) to bounce into a double play as Halligan scored to cut the lead to one. With Weiss on third, Gendaszek ended the game by getting Boyd to foul out along the first base side.
Rowan fell behind 1-0 in the first, but tied the game in the second as Dempsey singled home a run. The Profs then took the lead the following inning as Ciconte scored on an error. Rowan extended the lead to 3-1 in the sixth as Irvin McFarland (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) plated a run with a fielder's choice. MSU got a run back in the seventh, but the Profs restored the lead to two in the eighth when Ho-Won Lee (Medford, NJ/Cherokee) delivered an RBI single.
